The Washington Nationals on Monday acquired outfielder David DeJesus from the Chicago Cubs on Monday after claiming him on waivers, according to a major-league source. The Cubs were willing to make the trade for a player to be named rather than pull back DeJesus from waivers because the deal will save them about $2.5 million. In addition, outfielders Brian Bogusevic and Ryan Sweeney are close to coming off the DL. To clear room on their roster, the Nationals released outfielder Roger Bernadina, the source said. DeJesus, 33, is owed just over $1 million for the rest of the season, and the Nationals will inherit his $6.5 million club option or $1.5 million buyout for 2014. The Nats are set in their outfield with Bryce Harper, Denard Span and Jayson Werth, but DeJesus will give them protection against injury and improve their bench. DeJesus, who missed more than a month earlier this season with a right shoulder sprain, batted .250 with a .732 OPS and six homers in 284 at-bats for the Cubs. He is a career .279 hitter with a .771 OPS.
