The Washington Nationals have awarded a two year contract extension to reliever Sean Burnett, an extension well deserved. The deal extends two years and has an option for the 2013 season. It is reportedly worth $3.7 million.
Last season, Burnett appeared in 73 games, five shy of Tyler Clippard’s 78, for the team lead. He posted a 1-7 record with 3 saves, but added an impressive 2.14 ERA. In 63 innings, Burnett fanned 62 batters. Burnett was obtained from Pittsburgh in the 2009 trade that brought Burnett and Nyjer Morgan to Washington in exchange for Lastings Milledge and Joel Hanrahan.
I like this move and the money. Burnett is a strong, effective lefty out of the bullpen. His season and half in Washington has helped bolster the bullpen.
Now where the heck are my starting pitchers?
