In three professional seasons, Andrew Wells has played for six professional Independent teams in four different leagues; Evansville Otters, NYSL Federals, Roswell Invaders, Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings, San Angelo Colts, York Revolution.  In those three professional seasons Wells sits with a 2-5 record and a career ERA of 8.17. This definitely would not suggest a minor league contract offer. Wells who played at Siena College and later Wagner College, did not put up spectacular number while in school either; 9-14 with a 6.90 ERA, gave up 180 hits in 154 innings, walked 88 and struck out 107 (courtesy of The Baseball Cube).  Cormac Gordon of silive.com, did a fantastic write up of Wells and the struggles he went through to get where he is today. And it’s not just that he had Tommy John surgery as a junior at Wagner, it’s the persistence and never say die attitude.  According to Gordon, before surgery Wells was topping out at 88mph to 89 mph. Now, after a few years he has been touching between 93 and 94. If you take a look at his professional numbers, minus the wins and the losses, Wells is averaging nearly 10 strike outs per game.  Gordon reports that Wells is currently in the New York Mets’ minor league camp in Port St. Lucie Florida, because long-time scouts John Hagemann and Larry Izzo saw something in this 25-year-old that others didn’t.  The odds are really against Wells but it has never stopped him before. I wouldn’t count him out this time either. Devon is the Founder and Executive Director of The GM's Perspective.
