The New York Yankees and California Anaheim Los Angeles Angels are close to completing a deal that would send Vernon Wells and his horrific contract to the Bronx. The 34-year-old outfielder will have to waive his no-trade clause for it to happen, but it appears he’s ready to do just that. Wells is in the sixth year of a seven-year, $126 million contract, and is owed $21 million in each of the next two seasons. Sources claim the Angels will absorb a portion of that salary, and the Yankees would owe Wells about $13 million over the next two seasons. While that sounds like a decent deal for the Yankees, people should be reminded just what kind of player New York will be getting. Wells has missed 116 games over the past two seasons – his only two with the Angels – and in those years he has combined to hit just .222 with only 36 home runs and 95 RBI. His on-base percentage has been an atrocious .258, and his OPS is a woeful .667 while in Los Angeles. The fact that the Angels are reportedly willing to eat $29 million of his remaining salary tells you what they think of Wells. The Yankees have serious injury issues right now, but I’m just not sure what a guy like Wells really brings to the table. He’s terrible at this point in his career and I can’t see him adding anything to New York’s roster. He’ll just be another aging former star with a big contract clogging up the Yankees lineup. That said, Wells’ spring training numbers haven’t been terrible. In 14 Cactus League games, he is hitting .361 with an OPS of 1.112. But I just can’t see that translating to the regular season.
