The New York Yankees placed shortstop Derek Jeter on the 15-day disabled list on Wednesday with a left ankle injury. Reports claim that the team plans to shut him down for the remainder of the 2013 season. The 39-year-old Yankee captain has been battling soreness in his surgically repaired ankle and his season will be over after appearing in just 17 games. Jeter last played on Saturday against the Boston Red Sox, and he was removed from that game after experiencing soreness in his gimpy ankle. He has been battling problems with the ankle ever since he broke it during in Game 1 of the ALCS last October. It was surgically repaired later that month, but he fractured it again during spring training and never seemed fully healthy when he finally got on the field this season. He didn’t suit up until the 92nd game of the campaign, and hit just .190 this season with one home run and seven RBIs. Jeter underwent a CT scan on his ankle Saturday. While the scan was reportedly negative, the results of the test were passed on to the doctor who performed the surgery for further evaluation. Tuesday night it was announced that the Yankees had acquired shortstop Brendan Ryan from the Seattle Mariners for a player to be named later. Ryan is an outstanding fielder but has serious issues at the plate. The 31-year-old veteran hit just .192 with three home runs and 21 RBIs in 87 games for the Mariners this season. Expect Ryan to immediately step in at shortstop, filling in for Jeter and replacing the shaky Eduardo Nunez, who has not been reliable in the field at all this season. It was an incredibly tough season for Derek Jeter, but I think we can all agree that sitting out for the rest of the year is the right decision for all parties involved.

  • This is probably best for DJ and for the Yankees. I'm sure Derek feels that if he's hurting the team by playing when he isn't 100% then it's best to get ready for next season. Yankee fans may very well be seeing 2 more from the Corp 4 calling it quits soon...Andy Pettite when this season ends and Derek Jeter after next season.
