Ohhhh yes, the New York Yankees are back in first place all by their lonesome after beating the Rays 5-3, which is great news but there is more.
Rumor has it, via the NY Post, that speedster Brett Gardner has run the bases and practiced bunting for the first time since his July elbow surgery.
Gardner’s timetable to return is said to be just days away but skipper Joe Girardi said it will most likely be in a limited role to pinch run and maybe some left field.
So, how will the Yankees stealing machine fair diving for bases?
Well, according to Gardner (NY Post quoted this out of Girardi’s mouth but it would make no sense):
“I feel back to my old self. Diving for a ball, I don’t have any reservations about that.” (more…)

Yankees: My plea for Soriano
The 2012 MLB season is as exciting as ever but thanks to the media to divert the attention, while at the same time putting Yankee Universe into a tizzy, about something that has nothing to do with the now.

So, it came as no surprise when I read, courtesy of CBSSports.com Jon Heyman, that the return of closer Rafael Soriano for 2013 was really...
Sabathia's Slump Prompts New Criticism About His Weight
In an article I read over a year ago CC Sabathia talked about his ongoing struggle to stay at a healthy weight. I no longer remember the particulars about the article and I don't have the exact quote from CC but, to paraphrase, he said something to like this:"When I'm pitching well, I'm a good size. When I'm not pitching well, I'm too big."CC has not...
Yankees Game 146: Nunez hustles and Martin homers for Kuroda
Tampa Bay Rays 4 — New York Yankees 6
Eduardo Nunez got the offense going behind Kuroda in today’s 6-4 win over the Tampa Bay Rays.
Hiroki Kuroda took the mound and was dominant in his 6 innings of work. His first 6 outs were by strikeouts. He had a great slider that was practically untouchable. Once he received run support, he did surrender his first run on the following...
Cashman, Girardi: Jeter's injury is a big deal
Derek Jeter said his left ankle was well enough for him to play shortstop Friday night — and told Yankees manager Joe Girardi as much. But he still found himself in the designated hitter slot for a second straight game.
After aggravating the bone bruise Wednesday, while running out a grounder in Boston, Jeter insisted the injury was "no big deal." The Captain was...
Andy Pettitte’s Age 40-41 Predecessors
Perhaps inspired my teammate Mariano Rivera‘s vow to come back in 2013 after suffering an injury, Andy Pettitte is apparently considering a 2013 return in the wake of his injury-limited innings this season. Pettitte’s numbers this year (3.22 ERA, 3.41 FIP, albeit in a small, sub-60 inning sample so far) would be good for any pitcher. They are even more amazing considering that...
Prime Nine: New York Yankees
The Yankees are a unique situation unto themselves. Yet, even they have their own limits. They are said to be in savings mode following the season for a variety of reasons. The most important reason is that they are rapidly getting older and cannot continue to chase bad money after bad. Secondarily, even they have their limits. They have been in luxury tax territory...
Yankees add small ball to bash-happy offense
The New York Yankees have lived and died by the long ball for much of the season. An ability to consistently manufacture runs and a reliance on homers have been the overriding offensive factors in New York falling back to the pack in the AL East race since mid-July. As Nick Swisher put it, the Yanks found the right mix of "small ball and Bronx ball" in Sunday's crucial...
Derek Jeter: 38-year-old hit machine
Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter enters Saturday’s game against the Rays with 197 hits this season. He’s 38 years old. When he reaches 200 — and he will, barring some kind of awful slump or an extended injury absence — he’ll become only the fifth player in major-league history to accrue 200 hits in his age-38 season or later.
See who else has had 200+ hits at 38+ years old >>
Martin's three-run homer helps Yankees beat Rays
NEW YORK -- In one spot of the New York Yankees' clubhouse, starter Hiroki Kuroda was talking about how he was pitching better than even he expected this year. In another, Russell Martin was relishing his big hit -- a three-run homer that helped the Yankees beat the Tampa Bay Rays 6-4 Sunday -- in a season that's seen him have fewer hits than usual, big or otherwise. ...
Girardi will be back in 2013- Pettitte could be back also
Yankees manager Joe Girardi will be back with the team in 2013 regardless of what happens this season said GM, Brian Cashman, according to Ken Davidoff of the New York Post. Hal Steinbrenner, Yankees managing general partner, told the New York Post earlier this month that Girardi's job is safe even though the team blew a ten-game lead in the AL East and are now fighting the Rays...
Don't expect Yankees to overreact
Bonus notes from our MLB on FOX broadcast of the Tampa Bay Rays-New York Yankees game on Saturday, plus more ...
As I wrote Friday , the late George Steinbrenner would not have tolerated excuses for the New York Yankees blowing a 10-game lead in the AL East. In fact, "The Boss" might have fired manager Joe Girardi by now and replaced him with, I don't know, Lou Piniella...
Rays lose to Yankees, dropping farther in race
NEW YORK (AP) -- Russell Martin's three-run homer highlighted an eventful early burst and the New York Yankees kept their AL East lead, holding off Tampa Bay 6-4 Sunday and ending a most disappointing road trip for the Rays.
The Yankees won the last two in the three-game series. They began the day with a one-game division lead over Baltimore, which later played at Oakland.

Yankees 6, Rays 4
NEW YORK -- The New York Yankees erupted early Sunday, one big inning giving them a boost to provide Hiroki Kuroda the support he would need when the Tampa Bay Rays threatened later.
