As we move in to December, free agency is starting to heat up…
  • The Dodgers signed Chris Capuano (2 years, $10 million). That’s a pretty good bargain – Capuano was a target for the Pirates, and Fox Sports’ Jon Morosi confirms that they were “involved” before he signed with LA.
  • The Marlins signed closer Heath Bell (3 years, $27 million). YIKES. That’s an enormous amount for a CLOSER likely to be entering the downside of his career…plus it’s the Marlins. After this deal and Jonathan Papelbon‘s ridiculous contract with the Phillies, Neal Huntington NEEDS to be shopping Joel Hanrahan around this winter. Joel is great, but he’s at peak value and teams are paying ridiculous amounts for closers. I doubt they’ll actually move him, but this COULD be a chance to find a young impact player.
  • One year of Bell’s contract ($9 million) will be worth more than the entire Pirates bullpen is projected to make in 2012. It’s also more than the Bucs will be allowed to spend on the first ten rounds of the draft. Ridiculous.
  • The Bucs are reportedly interested in two left-handed pitchers from the Japanese league: Wei-Yin Chen and Tsuyoshi Wada. Charlie has the lowdown on them here. Chen is appealing but has some injury concerns, and Wada has a low arm slot but doesn’t throw very hard (86-87).
  • The minor league coaching staffs for 2012 were announced yesterday.
