The Outside Corner:
Following Monday's AL tiebreaker game, the MLB postseason begins Tuesday night at PNC Park in Pittsburgh. The Pirates host the Reds for a one-game, do-or-die playoff scheduled for 8:00 p.m. ET. It's the first playoff baseball Pittsburgh has seen in 20 years, and Bucs fans surely hope this postseason lasts longer than one game. The Reds suffered a crushing defeat in last year's NLDS, blowing a 2-0 series lead and losing three consecutive games at home to the eventual World Series champion Giants.
Starting Pitching: Francisco Liriano gets the start for the Pirates, coming off a resurgent regular season in which he compiled a 16-9 record and 3.02 ERA in 26 starts. The left-hander struck out an average of 9.1 batters per nine innings, but by cutting down on his walks and home runs allowed, Liriano looked more like the pitcher we saw in 2006 and 2010, when he was one of the best pitchers in the AL. He was outstanding at home, with an 8-1 record, 1.47 ERA and 0.98 WHIP in...
BEST OF MAXIM
The 2013 campaign for the Cincinnati Reds was supposed to end much differently than it did Tuesday night at PNC Park in Pittsburgh. The Reds were dealt a fatal blow by the Pirates to cap off a season in what many around Cincinnati are sure to regard as disappointing.
Needless to say, the bitter defeat leaves many questions heading into the offseason, an offseason that is likely...
If you are a fan of the Texas Rangers, how do you view the past few years? Is it a good thing that the team has been very good and has continued to make the post season? Or is it ultimately a bad thing with two losses in the World Series--one a brutal loss--two play-in losses and September fades? Judging from the reaction of my Twitter buds who are Rangers fans, it was another brutal...
So our Pirates have their first playoff game since 1992 tonight, and i still seem to have a few Pirates-related pieces of unlicensed and generic merch in my queue so I might as well get these all out now. With the now-or-never aspect of the one game Wild Card round, there's an off chance the Pirates season ends with a loss to the Reds. Only that isn't gonna happen, and this...
In their first postseason game since 1992, Francisco Liriano and the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Cincinnati Reds 6-2 Tuesday at PNC Park. Primarily using a slider and mid-90s fastball, the 29-year-old Liriano (16-8, 3.02 ERA) yielded only one run and four hits over seven innings against a solid Reds lineup. Signing a two-year deal worth $12.75 million last February, Liriano whiffed...
The Pirates beat the Reds last night in the NL Wild Card game, but an ugly storyline ensued surrounding Dallas Latos, the wife of Reds pitcher Mat Latos.
During the game, Latos tweeted that she was assaulted by a Pirates fan at PNC Park.
Got punched in the head at least 3 times by a pirates fan so this has been cool.

That. Was. Incredible. The Pirates are moving on to the NLDS after defeating the Reds in the wildest, most emotional, powerful sports environment you will ever witness. After being a part of it, I’m confident that is not hyperbole. This was an absolutely epic evening that no Pirate fan will ever forget.
The blackout – which was a tremendous success. The countless rousing ovations...
Source: FanGraphs God knows that when “Don’t Stop Believin’” by Journey became the unofficial theme song of the 2013 Pittsburgh Pirates, I wanted to jump off a bridge. But tonight, not even awful music can ruin my mood. I’ll be honest. I had absolutely no idea what I was walking into tonight. After all, I…
The Pirates and their long suffering fans made the most of their return to the postseason, thumping the Reds, 6-2, in the NL wild-card game. The victory clinched a meeting with the Cardinals in the best-of-five NLDS beginning Thursday night. Bucs 2B Neil Walker who smacked an RBI double in the win spoke with PiratesDugout.coms George Von Benko about the Pirates first postseason win since 1992.
Last night was just the opening act, tonight the playoffs officially begin!
This year’s playoffs (minus not having the Mets) to me look to be very enjoyable on paper. I don’t think there is a team that I legitimately can say I have a strong feeling “should” win it all.
Tonight, the Pittsburgh Pirates welcome the Cincinnati Reds to beautiful PNC Park.
This is a tough game...

That was perfect.
I don't even really know what else to say about this game. The big concern with the one game playoff is that no matter what you think the advantage that your favorite team might have, it's not guaranteed to bear itself out over such a short span. No matter how many times we all sat back and pointed to Liriano's numbers against lefties or at PNC...
The Pittsburgh Pirates are riding high after their first postseason victory in 21 years. They're confident they can beat anybody, anywhere.
A few hours after defeating Cincinnati in the NL wild-card game Tuesday night, the Pirates touched down in St. Louis. They're about to face another familiar foe in an unfamiliar month when they take on the NL Central champion Cardinals...
