Hector Noesi remains on track for a slot in the Seattle Mariners' starting rotation. Noesi allowed two runs over four innings before rain canceled Seattle's game against a Colorado Rockies' split squad Sunday with the Mariners ahead 3-2 in the top of the fifth. ''I think I'm doing good this spring,'' said Noesi, acquired from the Yankees along with catcher Jesus Montero in the trade that sent pitcher Michael Pineda to New York. ''I learn about everything every time I go out there. Just my mechanics were a little open.'' In his third spring-training start, Noesi threw two wild pitches, walked two and allowed four hits. Colorado had runners at the corners with no outs when rain and hail caused a 34-minute delay, then cancellation. Rockies right-hander Tyler Chatwood allowed three runs, seven hits and three walks with three strikeouts in 3 2-3 innings. None of the spring training stats count because of the rainout. Mariners make second round of 2012 roster cuts

Seven more moved to the minors Not that it wasn’t expected to happen, after all, this is a part of MLB baseball that young players have gotten used to on their journey to the big leagues. On Saturday, the Seattle Mariners reduced their spring training roster by seven players, and two of the players cut were a surprise to this guy. The cutting of pitcher Aaron Heilman, and outfielder...

M's say so long Hong-Chih Kuo

This just in. The Mariners have just released left-handed reliever Hong-Chih Kuo and now have an open spot on the 40-man roster. Kuo struggled most of the Cactus league pre-season and had a 17.55 ERA in 6.2 innings, allowing five home runs and a .417 batting average against. The move leaves the Mariners with 39 players in their Major League camp: 31 roster players and 8...

Left-hander Hong-Chih Kuo released by Mariners

Less than two years after making the NL All-Star team, left-hander Hong-Chih Kuo has been released by the Seattle Mariners. Signed to a $500,000 contract last month, Kuo had a 17.55 ERA in six spring training appearances over 6 2-3 innings. He allowed 13 earned runs and gave up five home runs. Kuo was an All-Star in 2010 with the Los Angeles Dodgers but struggled last season with...

Rockies-Mariners rained out in fourth inning

The game between a Colorado Rockies split squad and Seattle Mariners on Sunday was postponed by rain after a delay of 34 minutes in the top of the fourth inning. Seattle was leading 3-2 but the Rockies had runners on first and third with none out against Mariners starter Hector Noesi when a downpour of rain and hail began. Mariners third baseman Kyle Seager hit a two-run home run...

Keys From Last Week's Spring Training Games

Last week, a few of the Mariners spring training games were televised, giving fans an opportunity to see the make-up of this year’s team.  Casual observers may have been glancing at the impressive numbers the Mariners offense have been putting up this spring, or the pitching performances for the young group of starting pitchers.  But these numbers and statistics need to be taken...

Mariners have edge at closer in the West

There's nothing more difficult to predict every year than how a closer will do. The top two closers in the West Seattle's Brandon League and Los Angeles' Jordan Walden are entering just their second full seasons as closers. The Texas Rangers are gambling that Joe Nathan has returned to his former standout self and Oakland is still trying to settle on its ninth-inning...

Season Previews: Seattle Mariners

With Spring Training well underway, it's time for one of our favorite things in all the world: Season Previews. Five years ago, they began as a semi-serious analysis and ended up as half-assed haiku. We're just gonna go with what we know. Continuing our preview of the American League West, here is our version of the 2012 Seattle Mariners. Felix Hernandez Vargas and Iwakuma...

Mariners vs. Athletics Bring Two Countries Together

When the Seattle Mariners and Oakland Athletics open up the Major League season on March 28th in Japan, it’ll in some ways feel like a home game. The connection between the Mariners and Japan runs deeper than any other MLB team. With all the Japanese players of past and present on the Mariners’ roster and Seattle located on the Pacific Rim, the Mariners have been the most televised...

Cubs 12, Mariners 7

Seattle starter Jason Vargas was pounded for seven runs and eight hits while getting just two outs, and the Chicago Cubs beat the Mariners 12-7 Monday. Ichiro Suzuki, Jesus Montero and Kyle Seager homered for the Mariners, who tied the score 7-7 in the third against Travis Wood. Preparing for next week's major league opener in Tokyo against Oakland, the Mariners used a starting...

NFBC Satellite League Results

NFBC Satellite League I'm excited to be back in the NFBC Main Event fold this season. I'll be drafting in the second Main Event weekend in Las Vegas, on March 31. To help get ready for that, I participated Monday night in a Satellite event that essentially lays out the same as the main, at least in terms of format. It's a 15-team mixed league with 30 roster spots ...

Video: Brendan Ryan can impersonate Robert De Niro

Ryan does a really good job, actually. Apparently Tony La Russa isn't a big De Niro fan. If he were, perhaps he would have kept Brendan around longer.
