The Rangers just invested over 100 million in a starting pitcher from Japan, so they're probably done spending money this winter. Well, not exactly. If the price is right, according to Nolan Ryan, the franchise could still land All-Star first baseman Prince Fielder. After discussing the signing of Yu Darvish during a Thursday radio interview with Galloway and Company 103.3 KESN-FM, Ryan, the franchise's CEO, said the Rangers could still acquire Fielder if it "worked within our budget." "He's an impressive player," Ryan said. "For his body type, he's very athletic, he's very strong. He brings a lot to a ballclub, and so our interest level, if it worked within our budget and we can acquire Prince Fielder, we think we'd be a better ballcub. Do we have an interest? Yeah, we have an interest. But is that realistic to say that we have a shot at him? With what we did Wednesday and the position that Fielder's agent Scott Boras is taking, it's pretty hard to think that would develop. Sometimes when you think you're out of something, you get up the next day and find out that opportunities exist." Ryan was then asked how much the asking price would have to be lowered for the Rangers to make a deal with Fielder. "Hard to say because they have never made a firm proposal to us," Ryan said. "They talk in generalities and numbers and other people's contracts, and so you can speculate what it is.... One time they're talking eight years, one time they're talking 10 years, one time they're talking about a contract bigger than Ryan Howard's with Philadelphia." Ryan, who didn't sound like he was willing to pay in the 200 million range for the slugger, said the organization would try to "find creative ways" to get something done. "I think everybody would like to see him in your lineup," Ryan said. "All we can do is see what develops and you never know." Follow Jon Machota on Twitter: @jonmachota
