On Saturday at Wrigley Field, the Northwestern Wildcats took on the Michigan Wolverines in the first game at Wrigley since a contract was signed between the Cubs and Northwestern to allow a variety of NU varsity teams to play at Wrigley, including baseball, softball, lacrosse, and football. Northwestern won the game 6-0, and the star of the day was starting pitcher Luke Farrell, son of Red Sox manager John Farrell. The younger Farrell threw a complete game shutout, striking out nine without a walk and allowing just three hits in the win for the Cats. But the real star of the game may have been Wildcats sophomore Reid Hunter, who performed a pretty spot-on impression of Harry Caray while reading off Northwestern's starting lineup. The Cubs influence was strong at Wrigley, with legendary Cubs fan Ronnie Woo Woo in attendance cheering for Northwestern, but some things at Wrigley looked a little different, including flags of the 12 Big Ten schools flying above the center field scoreboard, Northwestern mascot (a mascot at Wrigley? NEVER!) Willie the Wildcat running around the stands getting the crowd pumped up, and a crowd covered in purple as opposed to blue. At any rate, it's a pretty cool experience for all of these players. It's not every day that you get to play in one of the most hallowed shrines in the game of baseball, and considering that most of the players on both sides of the field won't move on to a professional baseball career when their college days are over, it truly is a once in a lifetime opportunity to be on the field at Wrigley instead of in the crowd.
