Rain on Sunday night denied the Yankees an opportunity to send Boston off the deep end, but it also gave them an extra day off since last Thursday. With 13-3 Texas on the other end, they could definitely use it. Last night was billed as a duel of top lefties CC Sabathia and Derek Holland, but when two offensive juggernauts meet at The Ballpark in Arlington, pitching duels are going to be harder to come by than nine-run comebacks. Sure enough, the Yankees picked up right where they left off, striking for two first-inning runs and opening the lead up to 7-1 before Texas could muster much offense of their own. They got to Holland for seven runs, nine hits and four walks, striking out just once as they forced him to use 110 pitches in six innings. The Rangers bullpen shut them down from there, with Mark Lowe and Koji Uehara striking out five of the nine Yankees they faced. But seven runs were more than enough for Sabathia. After allowing Ian Kinsler and Elvis Andrus to open the first fr...

Holland's bad run vs. Yankees continues

Derek Holland falls to 0-5 vs. Yankees in first regular-season loss since Aug. 21.

Holland can’t hang with Sabathia

Derek Holland just didn’t have it tonight.  Maybe he was unnerved watching Pudge Rodriguez pitch from home to 2nd for the first pitch of the game.  Or maybe he just didn’t have it. Holland gave up two runs on three hits in the 1st inning.  Then he calmed down a little for the next few innings.  It seemed probable that the offense could catch up.  Until the 5th, when Holland...

Game 16

Tonight's Pitching Match-Up CC Sabathia- (1-0) 5.59 ERA 1.34 WHIP Derek Holland- (2-0) 3.10 ERA 0.89 WHIP The Yankees coming off a "sweep" in Boston look to roll into Texas and take a few games from maybe the best team in baseball. Sabathia coming off a win against the Twins looks to forward that good fortune in Texas tonight. In CC's last start, he pitched...

Yanks hammer Holland, beat Rangers

Derek Jeter had four hits to stretch his hitting streak to 13 games, Alex Rodriguez belted career home run No. 632 and the New York Yankees beat the Texas Rangers 7-4 on Monday night. CC Sabathia (2-0) struck out eight over eight innings for his 11th career win against the two-time defending American League champion Rangers, who won their first five series this season. The big...

Not-So-Rapid Reaction: Rangers 2, Yankees 0

On Monday night, excellent lefties CC Sabathia and Derek Holland combined to allow 11 runs. With struggling right-handers Hiroki Kuroda and Yu Darvish set to do battle last night, I was fully expecting a display of offensive fireworks, one that would thoroughly disappoint an entire nation that had called in sick from work just to see this game. Oops. When I predicted yesterday that...

How Many Games Will the Red Sox Win During Their Seven-Game Road Trip?

The Red Sox were rained out on Sunday, and they may have caught a break as a result. The team avoided facing CC Sabathia and the Yankees and is now able to slot Daniel Bard into the bullpen after skipping his spot in the rotation due to a combination of an off-day and the rainout. After facing one of the toughest stretches in their schedule all season long, the Red Sox will now also...

Hamilton powering up his value to Rangers

ARLINGTON, Texas On a night when a sluggish Rangers offense was made to look even more drowsy by Yankees starter C.C. Sabathia, Josh Hamilton remained the primary power source for the Rangers offense. Hamilton sent a Sabathia pitch 422 feet into the seats overlooking the Rangers bullpen in the sixth inning of a 7-4 loss. It was Hamilton's eighth home run in 17 games this season...

Garcia to be skipped?

From George A. King III: Joe Girardi has his rotation set through Friday night against the Tigers at Yankee Stadium. What the Yankees manager doesn’t have — at least publicly — is a starter for Saturday. Since last night’s game against the Red Sox at Fenway Park was washed out, CC Sabathia starts tonight against the Rangers instead of working last night. Ivan Nova...

Yankees-Rangers Preview

The New York Yankees lead the majors with 27 homers, and the Texas Rangers are right behind them with 26. Both power-packed lineups will be on display in Monday night's opener of a three-game set in Texas, where the Yankees may have the edge based on their history against Derek Holland. New York (9-6) had its series finale in Boston on Sunday rained out, giving it a day off...
