OPENING DAY LINEUP at NYM (1:10, SPSO/680AM/BRN): Bourn 8 Prado 5 McCann 2 Uggla 4 Freeman 3 Diaz 7 Heyward 9 Pastornicky 6 Hanson 1

— Atlanta Braves (@Braves) April 5, 2012

Starting Pitchers:

Tommy Hanson will be on the hill for the Braves. His 2011 stats are 11-7 with a 3.60 ERA in 22 starts.

Hanson is a tough pitcher, but I think the Mets can handle him today.

Johan Santana, a man who needs no introduction, will be on the hill for the Mets. He has not pitched since 2010, when he was 11-9 with a 2.98 ERA in 29 games.

Expect Santana to throw 88ish pitches today. It would be awesome to see him throw a quality start today.

It’s Opening Day… It’s very exciting. Hold back on the pessimism for the day, sit back, relax, and enjoy the game.

Let’s Go Mets!

Mets' Santana exceeds expectations in opener

NEW YORK The New York Mets weren't looking for greatness from Johan Santana in his first Major League start in more than 18 months. Just having their southpaw ace back on the mound after a full season without him was enough. But as the two-time Cy Young award winner often tends to do, Santana exceeded expectations Thursday, throwing five shutout innings in a 1-0 Opening Day...

Santana set to return as Mets open against Braves

Johan Santana and the Atlanta Braves have the same thing in mind heading into opening day. They'd both like to put last year behind them. After an extensive recovery from shoulder surgery, Santana is set to make his first major league start in 19 months Thursday when the New York Mets host a Braves team coming off a near-record collapse that cost them a playoff spot last September...

Opening Day: The more things change...

It was great to see Johan Santana's successful return from a serious injury, combining with the revamped bullpen to shut out the Braves on Opening Day. But the Mets can't get through a day without several reminders of their numerous problems. With two on and two out in the fifth inning, the Mets had their first scoring opportunity. It was time to pinch hit for Santana, who...

Mets players to wear Carter's jersey

Post-Game: Game 1 - Mets Outduel Braves On Opening Day

This afternoon's opening day game brought with it Johan Santana's first start in more than eighteen months. Johan was successful and efficient early before laboring in the fifth and getting a tapper back to the mound to get out of a bases loaded jam. Santana finished with five scoreless innings, allowing only two hits while walking two and striking out five. The game remained...

It Was A Good Start To The Season For The Mets

There was a crispness to the day. Both in the weather and the way the Mets played. It was a delightful day, one that gave us a glimpse of what could be when they put it all together. Hopefully, Mike Pelfrey was taking notes on Johan Santana and pitching out of trouble as he did in the fifth. The talking heads on SNY – and I’m not talking the play-by-play team – were in their...

Mets 1, Braves 0

Johan Santana pitched five innings of two-hit ball in his long-awaited return from shoulder surgery and David Wright hit an RBI single to lead the New York Mets past the Atlanta Braves 1-0 in their season opener Thursday. New York's revamped bullpen picked up for Santana and shut down the Braves, while the shortened fences at reconfigured Citi Field hardly came into play. But...

Braves find silver lining in black-clouded start

There are dark clouds and silver linings to every game. The dark cloud for the Braves was the fact they opened the 2012 season with only four hits and lost 1-0 to the New York Mets on Thursday. We'll come back to what went wrong for the Braves in a little bit, but right now, we're going to focus on the silver lining. It's the first game of a long season, one that...

MMO Mets Quotables – Opening Day Eve Edition

A new MMO feature for a new Mets season, introducing MMO Mets Quotables. “We lost Jose. We lost Carlos. We lost Frankie Rodriguez, all very, very good players. We lost some big pieces of the puzzle. But you know what you do? You bring other people in to fill those spots. You trust them. You believe in them. Now what I’ve got to have them do is believe in themselves, because...

Mets unveil Citi Field tribute to "The Kid"

The New York Mets may not have had Brazilian feather dancers or Muhammad Ali in the luxury boxes at their 2012 opening day festivities at  Citi Field, but a simple dedication to former-catcher Gary Carter may help brace Mets fans for what could be a trying season and put things into perspective. Carter, who was more familiarly know as "The Kid" died of brain cancer on...

Ace Matchup of the Day: Jon Lester vs. Justin Verlander Two of the best pitchers in the game go head-to-head against two of the best offenses in the game.
