BALTIMORE -- Wei-Yin Chen struck out 12 in just 5 2/3 innings, and the Orioles got homers from Matt Wieters and Omar Quintanilla in a 6-1 victory over Oakland Sunday afternoon.

Chen (9-6) set a record for strikeouts by a Taiwanese-born pitcher, breaking the mark that Chien-Ming Wang set on June 17, 2007, when pitching with the Yankees. For Chen, his previous career high for strikeouts was nine, achieved earlier this season against the Mariners.

Chen also became the first Oriole pitcher to strike out at least 10 in less than six innings of work.

The rookie left-hander gave up just one run on three hits in this start. But Chen also walked four, and he was up to 108 pitches when manager Buck Showalter removed him with the bases loaded in the sixth with a 5-1 lead.

Chen had lost four of his last five decisions, often not getting a lot of offensive support. But the Orioles helped him out more in this game, leaning heavily on the power, much as they've done throughout the season.

Adam Jones gave the Orioles (53-49) a 1-0 lead in the fourth with an RBI double before Wieters came up with runners at second and third and one out.

Wieters came into the game mired in a 1-for-30 slump and had sat out the past two games because of soreness in his right biceps. He flew out in his first at-bat but then blasted a three-run homer this time off starter Travis Blackley (3-3) for a 4-0 lead.

That broke the game open early. The A's (55-46) got a run in the sixth off Chen on a Yoenis Cespedes RBI single. Quintanilla then hit a solo homer in the bottom half for a 6-1 lead.

Quintanilla went 3-for-4, with a single, double and homer. He struck out in the eighth while trying to complete the cycle.

NOTES: The Orioles announced before the game that second baseman Brian Roberts will be having season-ending surgery on a torn labrum (hip) in the coming days. Roberts said he wasn't sure of the date for procedure, only that it's likely going to take place in Vail, Colo., and probably within the next seven to 10 days. Roberts added that the recovery/rehab time for this is expected to be four to six months, and he's expecting to be ready for 2013. He missed most of the 2010 and 2011 seasons with concussion problems and played just 17 games this year for a total of 115 in three years...The Orioles selected the contract of outfielder Lew Ford from Triple-A Norfolk Sunday. The 35-year-old hadn't played in the majors since 2007 but got right into the starting lineup here, batting fifth and playing left field...Oakland made a trade on Sunday, acquiring catcher George Kottaras from the Brewers in exchange for pitcher Faustino De Los Santos. The A's said that Kottaras, who has a .209 average in 58 games with the Brewers this year, will come to the team Monday, and they'll then make another move...This loss dropped Oakland to 18-4 this month, which still is the best record in baseball.
