The Baltimore Orioles claimed outfielder Steve Pearce off waivers after the New York Yankees designated him for assignment, MLB.com reported Saturday. Pearce, 29, is not eligible for the postseason if the Orioles make it, but he adds depth the last few games of the regular season. Outfielder Lew Ford is out with a groin injury. The Orioles actually acquired Pearce from the Yankees for cash in June, then the Houston Astros claimed him off waivers at the end of July. The Yankees picked up Pearce a second time earlier this week when then the Astros let him go. Pearce is batting .239 with four home runs and 26 RBI in 159 at-bats this year. The Orioles recalled right-hander Oliver Drake and placed him on the 60-day disabled list with shoulder tendinitis to make room for Pearce.

Yankees Game 159 Lineup: 9/30/12

Phil Hughes and the Yankees have a little to worry about over these last four games of 2012 All tied up again. Once again that’s where things stand for the Yankees and Orioles in the AL East after the Yankees dropped the ball yesterday afternoon, failing to pull out a win and keep pace and the lead over their close competition. Andy Pettitte pitched well, but not well enough...

NY Post columnist calls out Yanks’ Michael Kay and Robinson Cano

Phil Mushnick of the NY Post had some critical words for New York Yankees second basemen Robinson Cano and the voice of the Yankees Michael Kay.  See, Michael Kay has a propensity for calling out professional players that don’t show hustle or show professionalism at all times. However, this could be a bit of a contradiction seeing that one of the Yankees best players, Robinson...

Yankees: Hugh for Hughes

Phil Hughes (Photo credit: alexabboud) New York Yankees loss + Baltimore Orioles win = AL East first-place tie. Yesterdays, 3-2, loss vs. the Blue Jays was the same old song of stranding runners on base and not doing anything to different to change things. The power hitting Yankees need to get back to hitting homers ASAP, as there are only four games left in the regular season...

Yankees' Jayson Nix to Miss 10-14 Days

Yesterday, a strange thing happened.  Eduardo Nunez was removed from the Yankees game and Derek Jeter moved from DH out to shortstop.  This left Andy Pettitte slotted in the lineup to hit.  Of course, things worked themselves out and Pettitte did not have to bat, but Nunez's exit magnified the absence of Jayson Nix.  Nix had reported back to New York yesterday...

Girardi’s decisions questionable

The Yankees have been in an absolute dogfight over the past month or so, as Baltimore has constantly been on their heels. Currently, New York holds a half game lead, and the Orioles are leading 4-3 against the feeble and useless Red Sox. As the Yankees fight to maintain their grip on the AL East, one thing has caught my eye recently: Joe Girardi’s managerial decisions have sometimes...

Yankees' Cano OK day after getting hit on hand

New York Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano is in Saturday's lineup a day after getting hit in the left hand with a pitch. Cano underwent X-rays on the hand, which came back negative. Cano, batting fourth against the Toronto Blue Jays, hit a sacrifice fly in his first at-bat. Cano was hit by a pitch in the sixth inning of the Yankees' 11-4 win over Toronto on Friday...

Yankees 11, Blue Jays 4

Russell Martin hit a three-run homer, Eric Chavez added a two-run shot and the New York Yankees maintained their one-game lead atop the AL East by beating the Toronto Blue Jays 11-4 on Friday night. The victory let New York keep its slim lead over second-place Baltimore, which used six first-inning runs to beat Boston 9-1. Nick Swisher had two hits and two RBIs for the Yankees...

Orioles Propelled in Playoff Race By Reliable Bullpen, Long Ball (Video)

The Baltimore Orioles enter Saturday night's game against the Boston Red Sox just 1/2 game back from the New York Yankees for first place in the AL East. Baltimore has become the team to root for in 2012 and the team can credit their success to a stellar bullpen and home run power. The O's have set a franchise record this season, deploying 122 home runs at Camden Yards. When...

Machado's homer boosts Orioles past Red Sox

BALTIMORE -- The Orioles honored Hall of Fame third baseman Brooks Robinson before Saturday's game with Boston, unveiling a statue of him behind the bullpen in left-center field. Robinson spoke to the press a few minutes later and mentioned the way rookie third baseman Manny Machado's caught his eye. And with the way this season's gone for the Orioles, who else could...

Teix message: Mark returns just in time

Well, the final series of the regular season is upon us. The Boston Red Sox will come into Yankee Stadium for a three game set, hoping to play the role of spoiler and make the lives of their most hated rival difficult. The Yankees hope to finish out the season strong by securing the AL East, gaining some steam as they enter October baseball. For New York, it’s simple: take care...
