The Baltimore Orioles have cooled off considerably following their impressive start. Now they have the extremely difficult task of facing the Boston Red Sox's Jon Lester, who will be trying to maintain his perfect career record against the Orioles on Tuesday night. Lester will take the mound at Fenway Park looking to deal Baltimore its 11th loss in 14 games. Despite their slide, which includes dropping two of three at home to Boston from May 21-23, the Orioles (30-24) are two games ahead of the Red Sox (28-26) and one game behind Tampa Bay for the AL East lead. The Rays went ahead Sunday by dealing Baltimore its seventh loss in eight games, 8-4. "You play 162 of these things, and this is just six, seven games out of 162," third baseman Mark Reynolds told the team's official website. "It's not really that big of a deal when you think about it. We're going to get out of here, go to Boston for a day off. Go and regroup, and hopefully play some good ba...

Recap: Aceves spoils Salty's heroics; Sox lose in extra innings

Jarrod Saltalamacchia tried to steal some of the sports spotlight from the Celtics tonight, but Alfredo Aceves had other ideas. Down 6-4, Salty launched a 2-run homer off Orioles closer Jim Johnson with two outs. The shot barely cleared the Monster and in fact required replay to confirm it went out. The crowd and team were fired up...until Aceves came back out for the top of the...

Sox Future Rests with Prospects

Daniel Nava, Ryan Kalish, Ryan Lavarnway, and Jose Iglesias are all up-and-coming prospects in the Boston Red Sox farm system. While it may not seem realistic in the near future, the fact remains that the future of the Boston Red Sox will rest with prospects either currently on the team or down in the minor leagues.  Multiple positions are waiting to be filled by younger talent...

Dustin Pedroia Taking Risk By Trying Play With Torn Adductor in Thumb, But Has Proven to Have High Pain Threshold

Dustin Pedroia is eyeing a return to the diamond on Tuesday. The Red Sox second baseman has been shelved since May 28, when he re-aggravated a thumb injury only to learn later in the week that he suffered a torn adductor on his right thumb. But after the team's 5-1 loss to the Blue Jays on Sunday, Pedroia told reporters in Toronto that he intended to return on Tuesday, when the...

Daniel Bard Too Concerned With Perfection, Daisuke Matsuzaka Could Be Replacement in Rotation (Video)

Daniel Bard was demoted to the minor leagues on Tuesday, after a dismal outing in Toronto on Sunday afternoon. Bard may need some time to figure out his mechanics and turn things around. In the mean time, Daisuke Matsuzaka has looked strong on the mound in Pawtuckets in recent weeks and could be the replacement in the Red Sox rotation. NESN's Jim Rice feels that Bard is too concerned...

Dustin Pedroia Will Sport a Customized Splint to Protect Thumb, Feels 'Perfect' and Has 'No Reservations' About Playing

BOSTON –– Dustin Pedroia will finally give it go for the Red Sox. After missing six games with a torn adductor muscle in his right thumb, the Red Sox second baseman is returning to lineup against the Orioles as he dons a customized splint to prevent further damage. Before Tuesday's game, Bobby Valentine consulted Pedroia one more time to ensure his safety. Less than two hours...

Alfredo Aceves Wears Pirate-Themed Snuggie in Bullpen During Red Sox-Orioles Game (Photo)

For a relief pitcher, the early innings of a game are spent two ways: staying warm or getting warm. On Tuesday night, Alfredo Aceves found an interesting way to do the former. The Red Sox closer was spotted in the bullpen wearing a pirate-themed Snuggie or blanket of some kind, decorated with the Jolly Roger's trademark skull and crossbones look. Check it out in the screenshot...

Red Sox Continue to Focus on Pitching With 14 Picks on Day Two of 2012 MLB Draft

The Boston Red Sox continued to sift through available prospects on Tuesday, selecting 14 players on day two of the 2012 MLB Draft in rounds 2-15. So far, the Red Sox have focused their attention on the pitching staff, taking 11 pitchers in their first 17 picks. Right-handed pitcher Jamie Callahan was the first Red Sox pick of the day, coming off the board in the second round, No...

The Problem With Daniel Bard

On Sunday, Daniel Bard faced thirteen Blue Jays – he got four outs, walked six, hit two more, and gave up a home run for good measure. Despite that being the only hit he allowed, he gave up five runs, putting a cap on the disaster that has been his experiment as a starting pitcher. Given that he’s either walked or beaned 18 percent of the batters he’s faced this year, it’s...

2012 MLB All-Star Ballot Voting Totals - 6/5

The first wave of results are in for the American League voting totals for the 2012 MLB All-Star Game and the Boston Red Sox find only DH David Ortiz leading at his position. Adrian Gonzalez is not among the top five at first base. The same thing goes for Kevin Youkilis (third base) and Mike Aviles (shortstop) among the Red Sox infielders. Only Dustin Pedroia is among the...

David Ortiz Leads Designated Hitters After First Round of All-Star Voting

David Ortiz may not be participating in this year's Home Run Derby, but it's looking likely that he'll have a role in this year's All-Star Game anyway. The Red Sox designated hitter leads all DH candidates after one round of MLB All-Star voting, with a whopping 1,204,904 votes. His second-place challenger, Michael Young, trails by close to 200,000 votes with about...

Deep Impact: Nothing Really Matusz To Me

At the beginning of last year, Brian Matusz was a popular sleeper and a candidate to evolve into the next Greg Maddux, mixed with a side of MacGyver and a Dragon from the future. Everyone loves sleepers, as you think you’re the only one who knows what’s up. The funny thing is, everyone thinks like that and also knows that you know. If they know what you know, you should also...

Red Sox Aim to Stay Hot vs Orioles

Having just taken 2 out 3 over the weekend in Toronto, the Red Sox return home to Fenway looking to keep gaining ground in the division.  Despite still being in a last place tie with the Blue Jays, Boston sits just 3 games out of 1st at 28-26.  Since May 11th the Sox are [...]
