Found May 05, 2012 on Oriole Post:
The Baltimore Orioles won again, this time in Boston, to kick-off their three game set against the Red Sox, by a score of 6-4 in 13 innings.

Baltimore has won three in row, and nine out of their past eleven games.

They are 17-9 so far this young season, and once again the bullpen came through in the clutch, tossing seven scoreless innings. As well, timely hitting played a big role – of course. Chris Davis’ RBI-single broke a game deadlocked at four in the 13th inning, and Mark Reynolds – who also hit his first homer of the season – added an important insurance run with sacrifice fly.

Closer Jim Johnson would get the save, his 8th of the season and Troy Patton (1-0) won in relief.

Wei-Yin Chen was shaky, as he went five innings and gave up four runs – three earned. He was not great – but he was not terrible, either. At least he prevented the game from becoming ugly, or a blowout like we have seen in the past with the Orioles up there. Trust me, the Orioles would have probably allowed a big inning to take a place, and find themselves out of the game.

For Boston, Jon Lester - who started on the mound - was not as sharp and didn’t dominate the Orioles as he has done in the past (with a record of 14-0). He went six innings and gave up three runs.

The defense was very shaky in the first few innings; however, J.J. Hardy made a highlight reel play that resulted in two outs in the eighth inning that could have saved the game for Baltimore.

Once again, the Orioles fought all night and showed they are not pushovers. I debated if this team could possibly sustain their level of current play considering the past history and talent level.

Why not?

Mark Reynolds hilariously leaves Buck Showalter hanging after HR (GIF)

Mark Reynolds left manager Buck Showalter hanging in one of the funnier moments we’ve seen this season. The Orioles third baseman had crushed a solo home run in the third inning of Friday night’s win over the Red Sox when he made his way to the dugout. The homer was the first of the season for the slumping Reynolds, so his teammates gave him the silent treatment in the dugout...

Video: Baltimore Orioles infielder Chris Davis pitches 2 scoreless innings; gets win in 17 inning game against Red Sox

It took six hours and seven minutes to complete but the Baltimore Orioles finally defeated the Boston Red Sox 9-6 in 17 innings at Fenway Park this afternoon to earn a series sweep. Eighteen pitchers took the mound throwing a combined 570 pitches. Two of the men who toed the rubber aren’t pitchers [...]

Chris Davis Turns Terrible Day at Plate into Cy Young-Like Performance on Mound

Chris Davis had a lot of firsts on Sunday. Being mentioned in the same sentence as Cy Young had to be at the top of the list. Davis, who started the game as the designated hitter for the Orioles, ended up accomplishing something that no other player has done in more than a century. After going 0-for-8 at the plate during Baltimore's 17-inning 8-5 win in Boston on Sunday, Davis...

Davis pinch hits as Orioles pitcher, gets win in 17th inning

The Orioles bullpen has been a strength throughout 2012. Chris Davis wasn't supposed to be a factor. The Orioles first baseman picked up the win Sunday, striking out two on 23 pitches in two innings of relief in the 9-6, 17-inning win. Davis featured a split-finger fastball, which he used to strike out both Adrian Gonzalez and Jarrod Saltalamacchia. Davis, who said...

Allow MLB to Jump the Shark

Chris Davis Bringing High Heat Seriously, cast aside all pretenses and facades.  If the commissioner wants more interesting baseball near the end of the season, then he should be just as interested in compelling baseball at the beginning of the season.  Since Uncle Bud does not appear interested in returning my calls, I am left with no recourse but to write about my ideas...

DH Davis is winning pitcher in Orioles' 17-inning victory

BOSTON - That wasn't first baseman/DH Chris Davis who had ice packs on his right shoulder and elbow after Sunday's game. It was winning pitcher Chris Davis who had the ice on. Davis, who had a miserable day at the plate that almost got him into the record books for strikeouts, outpitched Red Sox outfielder Darnell McDonald to pick up the first win by an American League...

Orioles 9, Red Sox 6(17)

First baseman Chris Davis struck out five times, grounded into a double play and then tossed two scoreless innings of relief after Baltimore ran out of pitchers, picking up the win as the Orioles beat Boston 9-6 Sunday in 17 innings. Adam Jones hit a three-run homer in the top of the 17th off Darnell McDonald, an outfielder the Red Sox put on the mound once their bullpen was empty...

Chris Davis Outduels Darnell McDonald

And, yeah, that's the first time that two position players have squared off against each other since (believe it or not) Ty Cobb and George Sisler went toe-to-toe out of position on the last day of the 1925 season. The Baltimore Orioles and Boston Red Sox ran out of pitchers- enter Davis who had gone 0-for-8 at the plate with five strike outs by the time the game was over. Davis...

Orioles 6, Red Sox 4(13)

Chris Davis drove in the go-ahead run with a single in the top of the 13th inning and the Baltimore Orioles outlasted the Boston Red Sox 6-4 on Friday night. Mark Reynolds, who hit his first homer of the season in the third, added a sacrifice fly in the 13th and Jim Johnson put Boston down in order to end the game after 4 hours and 37 minutes. Troy Patton (1-0) pitched two scoreless...

Orioles Bullpen is Amazing

The biggest surprise team of the 2012 MLB season thus far has been the Baltimore Orioles at 19-9.  They're getting timely hitting and decent starting pitching, but it's the bullpen that has been  the big story.  Their relief pitchers are so effective that a position player, Chris Davis, was forced to the mound today and worked 2 scoreless innings and picked up the win...

Sox Lose In Extras To Orioles 6-4

Chris Davis's RBI single off Franklin Morales in the top of the 13th inning scored Matt Wieters as the Orioles beat Boston 6-4 at Fenway Park. The Red Sox got on the board first in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Cody Ross tripled and ended up scoring on a passed ball by Ronny Paulino. Baltimore got the run back in the top of the 3rd on a lead-off home run by Mark Reynolds off...

What in the World has happened with the Orioles? They win in Boston ... Again

What in the world has been done to the Baltimore Orioles? I mean this in a good way. We are now in the month of May, and the Birds are still flying high thanks to another big win against the Red Sox, this time in dominant fashion. They defeated Boston, 8-2, thanks to a ridiculous seven-run third inning which featured home runs from Adam Jones and Mark Reynolds. They are now 18...

The Birds Arrive

It should be good news, for the wobbly Sox, that the Orioles are coming to town. But it isn't.The Orioles are second in the AL East, with a 16-9 record. Tonight's starter, Wei-Yin Chen, is 2-0 with 19 strikeouts in 24 innings pitched. It would be great news, for all of baseball, if the Orioles resurged. Baltimore has had tough times, but it is a great baseball, town, and there...

Creeper of the Week: Mark Reynolds

Albert Pujols, Prince Fielder, Mark Teixeira, Jose Bautista, Ryan Howard, Miguel Cabrera, Dan Uggla, Adrian Gonzalez, Paul Konerko. Nice group, yeah? Those are 9 of the 10 leaders in HR from 2009-2011. Pujols, Fielder, Teixeira, Howard, Cabrera, Uggla. Listed there are 6 of the 7 players to hit at least 30 HR in every season from 2009 through 2011. The player not mentioned in both...

Game 27: Orioles 8, Red Sox 2

Game one of this series, the O's went into Fenway and had to face Jon Lester - that usually seems like an auto-loss. Especially when the Birds fell behind. But no, they battled back - a Wieters' triple, Mark Reynolds' first home run of the year (plus a double and a walk), three walks and a hit from Wilson Betemit - and the bullpen pitched 8 scoreless innings as the Orioles...
