Orioles starting pitcher Brian Matusz might not make his Wednesday start after fouling a ball off his nose during a bunting drill in batting practice Tuesday. Matusz, who rarely bats because he's an American League pitcher, has only four career plate appearances in the majors with not hits. It's customary for the next day's starting pitcher to take batting practice, and Matusz was working on his bunting against a pitching machine. Matusz is 5-6 with a 4.82 ERA this season.

Roberts returns to Orioles after 13-month layoff

Brian Roberts has returned to the Baltimore Orioles after being out for 13 months with a concussion. The Orioles planned to activate the two-time All-Star second baseman from the 60-day disabled list on Tuesday. He was penciled into the lineup at his customary leadoff spot against the Pittsburgh Pirates - although wet weather threatened to delay Roberts' season debut for at...

Arrieta gets back on track in spot start

On Wednesday morning, Jake Arrieta was a reliever -- demoted from the Baltimore Orioles' rotation last week. The former Opening Day starter was trying to turn his season around. By Wednesday night, he was the man, having thrown seven innings as an emergency starter in place of injured lefty Brian Matusz. Arrieta cruised into the middle innings and battled through the seventh...

Q&A with Orioles 17th Rd Pick Nick Grim

The Baltimore Orioles selected RHP Nick Grim from Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo.

At long last, Roberts returns for O's

ORIOLES IN THE NEWS Nolan Reimold, who started out the season on fire, looking like he was going to be a mixed league force in the outfield, continues to linger on the sidelines with that herniated disk in his neck (the pain has subsided, but there is still weakness in the area). Tuesday he was moved from the 15 day DL to the 60 day DL pushing back his return to action even farther...

Was Brian Roberts The Best AL Second Baseman Of The Aughts?

Brian Roberts is set to play tonight for the first time in 13 months, so what better time to dust off some three-year-old, half-baked research? I put this together in the fall of 2009 to see where B-Rob ranked among the best 2B of the past decade, and I don’t know why I didn’t post it then. But here it is, the top 2B of the ’00s ranked by WAR (with OPS+ and plate appearances...

Winning and Attendance: Part 1

I have said for years that the remedy for the poor attendance is not signing premier free agents, not signing "exciting name players" for marketing purposes, not putting "Baltimore" back on the away jerseys and not a better customer experience at the park. Those things are nice but factor that was going to move the needle for attendance was going to be winning...

MLB Insiders: Baltimore Orioles

The Pirates open a three-game series in Baltimore on Tuesday night. Right-hander Brad Lincoln will be on the mound for the Bucs. The Orioles will counter with lefty Wei-Yin Chen.

Orioles 8, Pirates 6

Brian Roberts returned from a 13-month layoff to get three hits and an RBI, and the Baltimore Orioles homered three times in an 8-6 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night. Activated from the 60-day disabled list before the game, Roberts went 3 for 4 with a sacrifice fly. Playing in the majors for the first time since sustaining a concussion on May 16, 2011, Baltimore...

The Return of Brian Roberts

Last night, the Orioles won their third straight game in a row as they defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates in interleague action, by a score of 8-6. Wei-Yin Chen (6-2) won another game – he went 6 1/3 innings, gave up four runs, Adam Jones had four hits, along with his 18th homer of the year; in addition, Mark Reynolds and Chris Davis went deep. Jim Johnson got his 19th save of the...

Brian Roberts returns to Orioles

Soon after a concussion interrupted his baseball career, Brian Roberts was more concerned with simply living a normal life than returning to the game he loves. ''There were times throughout the process that the future looked so bleak,'' the Baltimore Orioles second baseman said Tuesday, hours before he was to play his first major league game in 13 months. Roberts...

Pirates (32-28) at Orioles (35-26) 7:05 PM EST–Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Baltimore Here is the MLB.com Gameday TV: ROOT Sports During their recent stretch of of solid play, the Pirates have still had their fair share of ugly games. Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Baltimore Orioles – Game 60

Things get a bit tougher for the Pirates now, that’s why doing what you need to do against the bad teams is so essential.  They have at least a bit of a buffer now with two guys pitching who should or shouldn’t be in the rotation. First Pitch:  7:05 PM EST Where To Watch:  Root [...]
