On Tuesday the Cardinals placed Memphis Redbirds’ slugger and top prospect Oscar Taveras on the 7-day disabled list, a move that was a surprise to no one. Taveras was removed from the Redbirds’ game on June 23rd after trying to get back to second base on a pick off attempt. Taveras would later score on a home run, but his limp became worse. This will be Taveras’ second stint on the disabled list this year for the same injury, the ankle. He missed time from May 12th to June 8th due to the ankle injury. There has to be some concern from the Cardinals on this injury. The Cardinals are in no rush to promote Taveras and they may take it easy with him the rest of the year. There is not much more that he needs to work on, but I bet they would like him to work on his approach against left-handed pitchers. He is hitting .222 against lefties which is, by far, his lowest in his career. Don’t expect to see Taveras in St. Louis any time soon. In other moves… Memphis right-handed reliever Eric Fornataro was placed on the DL on Monday. This will alos be Fornataro’s second stint on the DL as he missed a couple of weeks in late May. Fornataro may have been a strong candidate for a MLB promotion when the Cards were on the Cleto, Marte, Blazek, etc run. This has been a rough year for Fornataro, his first at Triple-A. In 27 games, Fornataro has a 7.71 ERA which is about 5 points higher than last year’s ERA. In another Memphis Redbirds’ move, the Cardinals placed pitcher Maikel Cleto on waivers and he was picked up by the Kansas City Royals. Cleto had been a train wreck this year for Memphis and his short stint in the major leagues. Releasing Cleto opens up a spot in the starting rotation for Tyler Lyons who was optioned to Memphis last week. The Cleto move also opens up a spot on the 40-man roster should a move need to be made. To fill Cleto’s spot, the Cardinals promoted big right-handed pitcher Deryk Hooker from Springfield. Hooker was 1-2 with a 2.89 ERA and had 5 saves. Hooker was the third closer for Springfield as Keith Butler and Michael Blazek were both promoted to St. Louis. Hooker was the Cardinals’ 7th round pick in 2007 out of Mira Mesa HS in San Diego. He was converted to a reliever last year and has had very solid success. There will need to be more roster moves made soon to fill the spots, so a domino effect of moves could be in the works. I will have it all for you here when it happens.   Related articles Cardinals make several minors moves, plus a draftee signs Carlos Martinez dominates, Oscar Taveras aggrivates ankle – 6/23 Farm Report
