Roy Oswalt lasted only six starts in the Rangers' rotation. Will his stay in the Rangers bullpen be even shorter? Oswalt pitched two perfect innings in relief Sunday in the Rangers' 7-6 10-inning loss to Kansas City and needed only 30 pitches to do so. But then he told manager Ron Washington he couldn't go any longer, leaving the manager perplexed. "He said he couldn't go any further," Washington said. "He said he had enough. To get anymore, you have to ask him." Washington was ready to send Oswalt back out for the ninth inning of what was then a tie game, but Oswalt declined. Washington, who was operating down two relievers -- RHPs Mike Adams and Alexi Ogando needed days off -- and trying to protect a third (RHP Tanner Scheppers) didn't push the issue. It was the third time Oswalt had pitched in a seven-day span. By the end of his second inning, he'd pitched 9 1/3 innings in that stretch and thrown 150 pitches. Oswalt, dumped f...

Yu Darvish’s Bad Command Comparables

Last night, Yu Darvish took the mound against the Red Sox, and not surprisingly, he racked up a lot of walks and strikeouts. This is a common trend for Darvish, who has ended 39.6% of opposing plate appearances with a walk, hit batter, or a strikeout. Darvish is the kind of pitcher who succeeds or fails on his own, relying less on his defense than just about any other pitcher in...

Dempster gets first W as a Ranger

Another game, another day of fans analyzing and bemoaning Ron Washington’s lineup.  Craig Gentry and Mike Napoli were absent from the starting lineup in favor of David Murphy and Geovany Soto.  Murphy’s swinging a hot bat right now, and Soto hasn’t had a ton of AL at bats yet, so I kind of get it.  I think most people are just wondering when Michael Young is going to get...

Royals 7, Rangers 6(10)

Errors by Alberto Gonzalez and Mike Olt in a three-pitch span allowed the tiebreaking run to score in the 10th inning, giving the Kansas City Royals a 7-6 victory over the slumping Texas Rangers on Sunday. With the score 6-6, Michael Kirkman (0-2) walked Billy Butler leading off the 10th. Gonzalez, who entered in the ninth when Elvis Andrus left because of a sore shoulder, booted...

Memorable sports moment of the week – Nolan Ryan scraps Robin Ventura

19 years ago yesterday on August 4, 1993, Chicago White Sox third baseman Robin Ventura charged the mound to retaliate against legendary pitcher Nolan Ryan for being hit in the ribs by a fastball at Arlington Stadium in Texas. Never … Continue reading →

Holland struggles, poor defense costly in 10th

Derek Holland gave up two runs right away in the 1st inning, and I tried not to panic.  Holland believes he’s pitching well, and I waited for him to show me that. I’m still waiting. OK, so Dutch did have a few good innings.  But they were few and far between.  Between innings when he was giving up runs.  And home runs.  It was just not Derek’s day.  And the interview...

Jon Lester, Ryan Dempster Enter Matchup With Wildly Different Experiences in Recent Run Support (Video)

Jon Lester and Ryan Dempster lived very different lives their last time out on the mound. Lester, on one hand, pitched great but was dealt a hard-luck loss. Dempster, on the other, got shelled but then bailed out by his teammates, earning a no-decision while the Rangers ultimately won. NESN Nation's Dan Duquette is rooting for Dempster's struggles to continue in the American...

Sox Offense Beats Up on Darvish in Win!

The Red Sox just came off a very disappointing series against the Twins and were set to face the red hot Rangers and their new phenom pitcher Yu Darvish.  The Sox had Aaron Cook on the mound who in his last few outings has started well, but ended the games by giving up homeruns and often.  So, would the Sox even have a chance?  They would and would end up winning with ease. Cook...

Red Sox Finish Homestand with a Series against Texas Rangers

The Red Sox are finishing up a disappointing post trade deadline homestand against the Texas Rangers, and as of now they are almost out of time to make a last minute push for a playoff spot. The Fact that they have the 1st place Rangers for the next three games makes the task all that [...]

Recap: Inconsistency continues

(Photo by Jim Rogash/Getty Images) Well, we knew the Sox were not going to sweep the Rangers as their 2-game winning streak came to an end with a 6-3 loss to the Rangers. The game remained score-less until the 6th inning when Ian Kinsler singled in David Murphy, followed by a single from Hamilton that drove in Kinsler to give the Rangers a 2-0 lead. The Rangers scored 2 again in...
