Back in 1985, St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Ozzie Smith became Major League Baseball’s highest-paid player when he made over $2 million per year. This past weekend, the retired shortstop cleared half of that again. Smith sold 90 items of memorabilia from his personal collection through SCP Auctions. The total take was over $1.11 million, which includes a 10 percent buyers’ premium. Almost half the amount, $519,203, was generated by The Wizard’s 13 Gold Glove Awards, sold as a single lot. Next most costly was his 50th Anniversary All-Time Gold Glove Award trophy, which generated a winning bid of $65,048. Smith’s 2006 World Championship ring, a gift from the club, drew $42,448. Other items Smith sold ranged from baseball cards, uniform parts and equipment to the unusual – his first signing bonus check, Olympic torches from 1984 and 2002, a Simpsons cartoon gel and a key to the City of St. Louis.
