Inertia and Versatility: Yonder Alonso and Kyle Blanks

Yonder Alonso is the starting first baseman for the San Diego Padres. Always a highly regarded prospect, the Padres received Alonso in December 2011 as part of the return for Mat Latos. The Padres then traded Anthony Rizzo to the Cubs for Andrew Cashner in January 2012, and Alonso has been the team’s starting first baseman ever since. Kyle Blanks was selected by the Padres in...

Andrew Cashner, Offense Lead Padres to 13-4 Victory

Following losses on Thursday and Friday, and a narrow 2-1 win on Saturday, the San Diego Padres would pummel the Washington Nationals in a 13-4 victory on Sunday, splitting the four-game series. The Padres were led by a strong performance by gunslinging starter Andrew Cashner, who went 6.2 innings while surrendering three runs and striking out six batters. The former first-round...

Padres' Cory Luebke suffers setback during rehab

The San Diego Padres have been less than horrible this season.  They have won four of their last six games (including a sweep of the Baltimore Orioles), but they could be better.  Their ace, Cory Luebke, has been out while recovering from Tommy John surgery.  Unfortunately, he's hit yet another hiccup in his recovery. Corey Brock of MLB.com says Luebke's throwing...

Padres rumors: No plans of trading Chase Headley

Rumors involving potential Chase Headley trades began to swirl earlier this year when the third baseman told the San Diego Padres that he wouldn’t discuss a contract extension until the offseason. However, people with ties to the team told Jon Heyman of CBS Sports that it’s “unlikely” there will be a trade involving the Padres’ slugger. Prior to Headley cutting...

Jordan Zimmermann: “I just made two mistakes."

"He pitched an unbelievable game and swung the bat better than most of the guys in the lineup. It’s a waste we couldn’t pull this one out. That’s a tough loss." (Davey Johnson on Jordan Zimmermann, 5/19/2013) "I just made two mistakes." (Jordan Zimmermann, via Washington Times, 5/19/2013) Padres 2, Nationals 1: Wasted effort. 85-pitch complete...

Goon squad picks up Nationals

Nationals' Jayson Werth likely out two more weeks

The Washington Nationals have been playing mediocre baseball lately.  With last night's loss, they dropped to 23-22 on the season.  And now it looks like they will have to try to right the ship without Jayson Werth for longer than previously anticipated. Just yesterday news came out that Werth was progressing nicely and expected to join the Nationals on Friday.  Now, as...

Nationals' Ross Detwiler won't require DL stint

Washington Nationals starting pitcher Ross Detwiler was forced to exit his last start early due to a back issue. A recent MRI revealed a slight oblique strain, which is generally a concerning injury. However, general manager Mike Rizzo told Adam Kilgore of The Washington Post that he doesn't expect Detwiler to require a trip to the disabled list. “We’re hoping he does...

Why the Washington Nationals Will (and Will Not) Make the World Series

Roughly four years ago, when the Nationals were playingmore like the Natinals, my friend and former (almost) best manDave (aka “Furniture”) made a friendly wager with me that, at the time, appeared safe for decades to come.  Furniturespeculated that the Nationals would leave Washington, D.C. before they even appeared in a World Series game.  Because betting money on sports...
