Jesus Guzman hit two home runs and Chase Headley had one to hand Tim Lincecum another setback, powering the San Diego Padres past the San Francisco Giants 6-3 on Wednesday to avoid a three-game sweep. Will Venable also hit a two-run double to help the Padres chase Lincecum (4-11) after he allowed five runs in 4 2-3 innings. The two-time NL Cy Young Award winner had shown signs of progress in his previous two outings. Instead, he's still trying to put three straight solid starts together and turnaround the worst season of his career. Jason Marquis (4-5) gave up three hits and one earned run in 7 1-3 innings. He struck out eight and walked one to send the NL West-leading Giants to only their third loss in 12 games.

The Pirates started off their trade season with acquiring Wandy Rodriguez yesterday, but they probably aren’t done. - Jon Heyman reports that the market for Chase Headley is “extremely strong” and he is likely to be dealt in the next week. As many as ten teams have inquired on the 28-year old, with the Pirates being one of the more aggressive ones. Joel Sherman of the NY...

Trade Rumors: Red Sox Outfielders, Chase Headley

Two afternoon trade rumors. **According to Jon Heyman, there is a “strong probability” that the San Diego Padres will deal Chase Headley. Heyman reports that the Padres are “down the road” in talks with teams who are willing to give up a top prospect to land the third baseman. The Yankees recently lost Alex Rodriguez, but Heyman says they’re not willing to make a strong...

Headley rumors grow from a whisper to a roar

Almost as soon as Alex Rodriguez hit the ground Tuesday night clutching his broken hand, the rumors about Chase Headley and the New York Yankees started flying. A number of teams had already contacted the San Diego Padres about the availability of the third baseman. With A-Rod out, certainly the Yankees would be calling. A New York radio station even put in a call to a Padres...

Postgame Wrap: Padres Defeat Giants in Split-Squad Game

Tim Lincecum is officially back. No, not Back, with a capital B, like he was in his 2008-09 years, or even his pretty good 2010 and really good 2011. No, he’s back to being bad, like he was before he was good, like he was after he was bad again. Because he was good for two games. Now he’s bad again. He’s the old new Timmy, not the new old Timmy or the new new Timmy. God, I...

Pirates Less Interested in Chase Headley

Jayson Stark has the latest on Chase Headley here. Stark says that the Pirates, Indians, Athletics, and Orioles were the teams who have been the most aggressive for the San Diego Padres’ third baseman. Stark notes that the Pirates and Indians seem less motivated to do a Headley deal now than they would over the winter. He also noted that Oakland and Baltimore haven’t backed off...

SF Giants Rumors: Chase Headley and Hunter Pence Make Sense, Minus Two Bullpen Arms Off The List

Jon Heyman of says there is a strong probability that Padres third baseman Chase Headley will be dealt.   The San Francisco Giants are in the market for a third baseman and switch hitting, 28-year-old Headley would make perfect sense. It’s just not likely that the Padres would deal him within the division. Ken Rosenthal of says the Phillies are letting...

Game Picks - Thursday: July 26, 2012

Oh my! 13-2! Now that is a good day. Some of the mirth was removed when one of the incorrect picks was the Game of the Day pick as the Rockies actually won a game. Jeff Francis was very good for the Rockies in that one. The only other incorrect pick was the Giants as Tim Lincecum fell victim to two long balls that accounted for four of the Padres' six runs. But wow, that...

Daily Friar 7.25.12

Every time we play the Giants it has a playoff atmosphere to it. I get that vibe especially when we are playing in San Francisco. I don't know if it's the sold out crowds or what, but it feels like a playoff game every time. Those people up there live and die with every pitch it seems, they go crazy for a base hit even. But that place really exploded when Angel Pagan stole...

Daily Friar 7.26.12

It seemed that with each game against the Giants the Padres were playing better and better. First game we were slaughtered, the second game was a little better until the heartbreak at the end, then yesterday's game was spectacular. Believe it or not these Padres are actually hitting pretty darn well over the past few weeks, and that trend continued yesterday. Tim Lincecum looked...
