San Diego Padres right-hander Andrew Cashner experienced a freak injury while hunting this offseason. The injury was initially expected to cause him to miss the start of the regular season, but Cashner is now confident that he’ll be on San Diego’s Opening Day roster, according to Bill Center of The Union-Times San Diego. “I feel like I’m ready to go,” said the right-handed pitcher. “I’m playing catch every other day. They’re still being cautious, but I don’t see why I won’t be ready to start the season with the Padres.” Cashner’s thumb was cut this offseason while helping his friend dress a white tail deer. While the wound was very small, it still required surgery to repair and was expected to cause him to start the regular season on the disabled list. At this point, it appears Cashner could start the season with the team, but general manager Josh Byrnes said recently that the right-hander will likely initially be used as a reliever. Cashner was expected to compete for a starting role, but he probably won’t have time to build his innings to the point of beginning the season in the Padres’ rotation. Also last night it was announced that Clayton Richard has signed with the club, thus avoiding arbitration. There is significance...
