Andrew Cashner allowed two runs over seven innings and Logan Forsythe Jedd Gyorko and Will Venable hit solo homers Friday night as the Padres defeated the Yankees 7-2 before a sellout crowd of 44124 at Petco Park.
Cashner beat the Yankees with his arm legs and glove.
The right-hander held New York to seven hits and no walks scored from first on an Everth Cabrera triple and made two excellent defensive plays as the Padres defeated the Yankees in New York’s first game ever at Petco Park and their first game in San Diego since the 2002 season.
Forsythe snapped a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the fourth with his fourth homer of the season on a full-count breaking ball from Yankees starter CC Sabathia. The drive landed in the second row of seats in left.
The Padres made it 4-2 later in the inning when Cashner singled to the right side (Sabathia failed to cover first) and scored on Everth Cabrera’s triple to left-center – one of four hits by the beleaguered shortstop.
