While consecutive victories against arguably the worst team in the majors isn't something to get overly excited about, the Milwaukee Brewers hope it's at least the beginning of good things to come. The Brewers look for a season-high third straight home win Friday night while trying to extend the San Diego Padres' road skid to seven games. Norichika Aoki hit a pair of home runs, including the game-winner in the 10th inning of a 4-3 victory over Chicago on Thursday. The win was the seventh in 10 games for the injury-plagued Brewers (26-31), who had lost three straight series at Miller Park before taking two of three from the lowly Cubs. "We need to start winning a lot of (series),'' said manager Ron Roenicke, whose club is 14-16 at home after it was a major league-best 57-24 last season. With key players like Jonathan Lucroy, Mat Gamel, Alex Gonzalez and Chris Narveson injured, the Brewers need the likes of Aoki to step up if the team hopes to contend for ...

Two homers, two pies for Aoki, translator

MILWAUKEE -- There are plenty of similarities between baseball in Japan and in the major leagues, but Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Norichika Aoki found out Thursday that there is at least one significant difference. After hitting a walk-off home run to beat the Chicago Cubs, the Japanese star -- as well as his translator -- were greeted with shaving cream pies in the face in the...

Deal: No written opinion in Braun case

Major League Baseball and its players' association decided there will be no written decision in the case overturning Ryan Braun's drug suspension, while also changing the rules that allowed the Milwaukee Brewers outfielder to get his 50-game penalty thrown out. MLB and the union announced changes to their drug-testing agreement Thursday in the wake of the Feb. 23 decision...

Brewers look to bounce back behind Greinke

The Chicago Cubs' abysmal offense finally came to life in a series-opening rout of the Milwaukee Brewers. Duplicating that outburst Wednesday night seems unlikely with the Brewers sending Zack Greinke to the Miller Park mound. With a 10-0 victory Tuesday, Chicago (19-36) snapped an 11-game road losing streak, which matched the franchise record set in 1954. Alfonso Soriano hit...

MILWAUKEE (AP) The Brewers agreed to contracts with their two first-round draft picks, catcher Clint Coulter and outfielder Victor Rouche. Coulter was taken 27th with the pick Milwaukee gained from Detroit after losing Prince Fielder in free agency, and Rouche was selected 28th. The 18-year-old Coulter hit .405 with three homers, 14 RBIs and 18 steals as a senior at Union High...

Greinke (7-2) extended his home winning streak to 15 straight decisions at Miller Park. Greinke gave up two hits in seven innings, with two walks and a wild pitch. Daily Friar 6.6.12

I'm going on record to say that last night's game was the best of the season so far. Carlos Quentin was tearing it up and was only overshadowed by Logan Forsythe and his heroic walk off home run. Everything seemed to just go right last night. Maybin with the clutch double, Quentin with the two home runs, then Forsythe with his monstrous walk off. And yes you did read that...

Velocity Decline and Pitcher Attrition by Age

On May 28, the Twins released 33-year-old starter Jason Marquis. Considering how bad Twins pitchers have been this season, Marquis’ numbers stood out as being even worse. In seven starts, Marquis posted a 8.47 ERA and a 7.25 FIP, numbers driven largely by a 7.5% strikeout rate, a 27.3% HR/FB and a sky-high .352 BABIP against. There was some speculation that, since Marquis has...

Daily Friar 6.8.12

The Padres have a winning formula on their hands. They will win the first game of a series, say job well done, and forget about the other 2 or 3. At least lately that seems to be the case for them. So if that holds true then we should see a win tonight against the Brewers, right? I don't really know anymore with this team. It's sad that the one thing I am looking forward...

Forget about bobbleheads. Let’s get crunk in Tucson.

The Triple-A Tucson Padres, whose attendance this year has been a little slow, have come up with a promotion that’s either genius or reckless, depending on your point of view. If you happen to live in a large house with Greek letters on the front, you probably think the Kino Krawl is super awesome. The deal: you buy a ticket for Friday’s game (cost: $15) and in addition to admission...

Cory Spangenberg hit his 1st HR of the year, and Rymer Liriano had 4 hits... and yet the Storm still managed to lose. Not the best day to be a pitcher in the Padres' system

Friars Fail to Capitalize on San Francisco's Follies, Lose Series.

The Padres and the Giants played three exciting games, with each team getting 6-5 wins, but the Padres lack of timely hitting cost them in the error-riddled rubber game on Thursday afternoon. The Padres went an awful 2-19 with runners in scoring position, leaving 12 on base. They loaded the bases without scoring three different innings. They will fly out to Wisconsin to begin a...

Tater Trot Tracker: Trot Times for June 7 by Larry Granillo

Just a quick post as today (and possibly this weekend) is going to be busy. Let's get to the trots! Home Run of the Day: Norichika Aoki, Milwaukee Brewers #2 - 22.68 seconds [video] Before Thursday, the Japanese rookie had yet to hit a home run in the traditional, over-the-fence manner. By the end of the day, Aoki had accomplished that feat twice *and* hit his first Major...
