San Diego Padres bullpen coach Darrel Akerfelds, who turned 50 on June 12, lost his courageous 19-month fight against pancreatic cancer Sunday morning. Akerfelds died at the Cancer Center of America in Phoenix, Ariz. Padres manager Bud Black notified his team of Akerfelds' death before Sunday's game at Petco Park. There was a moment of silence before the first pitch of the Mariners-Padres game. "The San Diego Padres are deeply saddened by the loss of Darrel Akerfelds," said Black. "Ak was an invaluable member of the Padres coaching staff. He brought a tireless work ethic and passion for baseball to the ballpark every day. He was a loyal Padre to the end. "Players and coaches were made better by Ak. He will be sorely missed and what he brought to this organization will never be forgotten." Members of the Padres bullpen carried Akerfelds' camouflage No. 48 uniform to the bullpen before the game and hung it on the fence facing th...

New Owner Should Focus on Winning Padres Fans Back

With the sale of the Padres coming soon, it has forced me to think about how the new owner will be received.  Padres fans have had their share of bad owners and bad front office decisions, so I expect as many people to be skeptical as are optimistic when it comes to a new owner.  With that said, I offer you a crazy idea and one that may be unrealistic, but given what Padres fans...

2012 All-Star Representative: I Nominate Chase Headley

Last year I argued Chase Headley should have been an All-Star, instead Scott Rolen and his .241 average got the nod. Rolen benefited from plenty of injuries at the hot corner and a great reputation to earn his seventh all-star bid.  Although some could argue that no Padres is worthy of an all-star bid, each team will be represented and since the pitching staff has been decimated...

Should the Padres consider a Chase Headley trade?

Jon Heyman of CBS is reporting that there is apparently a decent bit of interest in San Diego Padres third baseman Chase Headley. Headley currently has a .780 OPS for the last place Padres, and is just 28 years-old. He's only being paid $3.475 million this year, and is under team control for the next two seasons. Since he became a regular in 2009 for San Diego, Headley...

Daily Friar 6.25.12

The Padres lost and won yesterday. The loss came internally as a member of the Padres family passed away yesterday afternoon. Darrel Akerfelds passed away at the age of 50 after battling pancreatic cancer. Such a terrible disease for a great man to have to fight. His death didn't keep the Padres down though, they came out and put on a masterful pitching performance. In doing...

Padres 8, Astros 7(10)

Carlos Quentin hit an RBI double in the 10th inning to lift the San Diego Padres to an 8-7 win over the Houston Astros on Monday night. Chase Headley walked with one out and stole second before Quentin drove him in with a drive to right-center against Brandon Lyon (0-2). San Diego grabbed a 7-6 lead on Jesus Guzman's two-run homer in the eighth inning but Jason Castro tied...

June Gloom

Now that I'm not in school anymore and I am a regular working guy, June doesn't hold the same appeal for me. When I was younger June represented the end of another school year and the beginning of a baseball-filled summer. Now I am an adult and don't get 12 weeks off in the summer but at least I still have baseball, right? Maybe not when your favorite team is the Padres...

Padres will listen to offers on Chase Headley

The San Diego Padres are in no position to contend this year and will probably become sellers at the trade deadline. One of their best players is Chase Headley and as Jon Heyman of CBSSports writes “while they head into the trade season with no intention to deal Headley, they will at least listen.” The price for Headley won't be cheap though. Heyman adds that a Padres official...

Mariners vs. San Diego Padres: MLB baseball love ‘em & hate ‘em Game 3

NWSB Insider and Seattle Mariners blogger Jonathan Irwin reports on the third and final game of the interleague series versus the San Diego Padres. Even with strong pitching, the Mariners bats can't help them win games. The Mariners are now 31-43, seemingly already digging their proverbial grave. The top five hitters had just 2 hits—not including Kyle Seager's pinch hit...
