“Hope springs eternal.” - Alexander Pope The Padres are pretty much done for this off-season.  Spring Training is closing in; the payroll is projected to be in the $50 million range, where Jeff Moorad said it would be.  One has to figure the Padres will now draw no more cards.  With a new GM seated at the table, never a better time to review Josh Byrnes’ first time cooking at the Hot Stove for the Friars. First off, Byrnes took over the post on Halloween.  For the sake of clarity: those decisions occurring prior to his control of the team will be omitted.  With that established, let’s look at the moves made so far and try to develop some idea of a common thread. NOVEMBER 16 – Signed OF/1B Mark Kotsay to a 1-year contract. Before dismissing this move as lacking importance, consider: Kotsay was given a guaranteed contract.  They didn’t invite him to camp in late January and give him a minor league deal.  They gave him the money.  That means, at least to me, there was some demand ...

The Curious Case of Beamer Weems

The Padres have a shortstop prospect named Beamer Weems. You are forgiven if you do not know who Beamer Weems is… A lot of people think Weems is a non-prospect. And that’s a completely fair and understandable position to take. After all, he wasn’t on any prospect lists (including the Friarhood Top 30). For his career he has hit: .235/.362/.354. A .700 OPS shortstop isn’t...

The Plunger, Quentin, Cashner, Parallel

Random thoughts raced through my mind as a plunged a toilet at 11:30 pm a few nights back. They began with the acquisition of Carlos Quentin, made their way to the Anthony Rizzo for Andrew Cashner trade, and returned full circle to where they belonged: the plunger in my hand. After one plunges a toilet what is one supposed to do with this dripping wet, filth covered tool of liberation...

This frown’s not turning upside down

The San Diego Padres made an unsurprising move on Friday. They sent first baseman Anthony Rizzo and pitcher Zach Cates to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for pitcher Andrew Cashner and outfielder Kyung-Min Na. Much of the initial reaction to the trade is negative from the Padres’ perspective. Here are my thoughts (obviously). I’m not going to get knee deep in the numbers...

Andrew Cashner: A Trip In The Way-Back Machine

You need to feel better and I am here to help the cause. I'm fine. But it's you that requires comfort. You are uneasy. Your dis-ease stems from the Padres decision to trade Anthony Rizzo, one of the system's top prospects for what amounts to a late inning reliever with shoulder issues and a light hitting elf from South Korea. You are hurting and in need of reassurance....

Tim Sullivan Makes-Up For What The U-T Lacks

A lot of criticism has been heaped upon segments of the San Diego media right here on this site. This past weekend I met up with some friends and when discussing the sources we seek out for information on the Padres the San Diego Union Tribune was not mentioned once.I do not apologize for the criticism leveled. In the interest of fairness however I need to find the time to also give...

19 Reasons Why A Losing Padres Season Became Bearable

The 2011 Padres season, one in which the home team finished 20 games below .500, was difficult on each and every one of our faithful community. But despite the losses exceeding the wins in by a wide margin, reflection has provided me with much needed perspective. In many ways the 2011 season was akin to Star Wars: The Phantom Menace . . .Hindsight tells us that the Phantom Menace...

Daily Friar 1.9.12

It appears that we can put one chapter of the Padres storied history behind us. As one of the articles below will tell you all, the sale from John Moores to Jeff Moorad is nearly complete. This is good news seeing as we can all move on from this and Moorad can put his money to the team. Especially once the television deal becomes complete and we get the money due to us from that...

Inbox: Analyzing winter flurry of Padres moves

How will the Carlos Quentin trade impact the rest of the outfield? Did San Diego sell low on Anthony Rizzo? Corey Brock fields this and more in the Padres Inbox.
