PLAYERS: Mark Kotsay
TEAMS: San Diego Padres
Mark Kotsay's veteran presence and contributions off the bench this season have convinced the San Diego Padres to sign him to one-year contract extension that will keep him in San Diego through the 2013 season, the team announced Sunday. "I enjoy my role here," Kotsay said, according to MLB.com. "Being a part of this club going forward is exciting for me, to have this opportunity and be one of the leaders of the club inside the locker room and to be able to contribute on field still and have some success is something that I enjoy doing. I love the game of baseball, and couldn't be more happy to have this opportunity to do it at home in San Diego." Kotsay, who will turn 37 on Dec. 2, is hitting .275 this season with one home run and nine RBIs in 102 at-bats. He is 9-for-31 (.290) as a pinch-hitter. Kotsay had signed a one-year deal with the Padres worth $1.25 million last Nov. 15.

Padres place closer Street on DL

San Diego Padres closer Huston Street was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a strain near his pitching shoulder. The team said Street has a strained right lat. He left Friday night's game against Miami after issuing a two-out walk in the 10th inning and was scheduled for an MRI exam Saturday. The right-hander said he didn't think it was a major injury. San...

Daily Friar 8.12.12

The way that the Padres are playing right now has me really excited for next year. I know that is looking ahead pretty far, but if this team can stay together and be cohesive then I think there could be good things ahead. In the most recent issue of Sports Illustrated they said that the Padres have a decent chance at contending next year, and I tend to agree. Josh Byrnes is beginning...

Padres 5, Pirates 0

Jason Marquis took a no-hitter into the seventh inning Saturday night before settling for a two-hitter as the San Diego Padres beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-0. Travis Snider broke up the bid with an infield single off the pitcher's mound leading off the seventh inning. Second baseman Alexi Amarista dived to his right but the ball glanced off his glove. Released earlier this...

Trade Chase Headley!!!

Josh Byrnes is a very confusing dude. Carlos Quentin the hottest trade chip out there? Screw that, he signs him to an extension to the 2015 season. The "experts" say, "OK, OK, we'll give you the Quentin signing since he's a hometown guy, but seriously, Josh you have to trade Huston Street. He's injury prone and why would this horrible team need to spend...

Braves struggle against hot Padres in loss

ATLANTA (AP) -- Eric Stults combined with two relievers on a five-hitter, Chase Headley homered and drove in two runs and the San Diego Padres beat the Atlanta Braves 4-1 on Monday night. Stults (3-2) gave up five hits and one run in 7 2-3 innings -- his longest start in three years. While with the Dodgers, Stults beat the Giants 8-0 on May 9, 2009, his last complete game. The...

Daily Friar 8.11.12

Let's take a minute and talk about prospects. They are supposed to be the next stars of your team and help your team make it to the promise land. However, let's get one thing clear, prospects can always go either way once they hit the majors. Obviously you want your guy to be crushing it in the minors and then continue to do so in the majors. Manny Machado of the Orioles...

Game 114: Pirates 11 Padres 5

"One swing."That's what I told myself when the Padres took their 4-0 lead in the first inning today.  As I wrote earlier today, the Pirates are playing badly. I'm trying to take the long view of the season here, but they're not making it super-easy. A sweep to the Padres with Ross Ohlendorf on the mound? That'd be tough to stomach, wild card lead or no...

8/11 Recap | Padres 5 Pirates 0

The Pirates were dominated by Jason Marquis and lost their third straight game, and second straight to the Padres. Marquis was brilliant, throwing a complete game two hitter and not allowing a run while facing throwing just 106 pitches. The two Pirates hits came from Travis Snider and Pedro Alvarez, both were singles. A.J. Burnett seemed to pick the right night to have an off...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. San Diego Padres – Game 113

I put last night’s game mostly on Hurdle.  McDonald shouldn’t have pitched in his last game, let alone this game, and you can see why.  He clearly needs to get things together, outside of the rotation.  That is 100% Clint Hurdle’s fault. Clint Hurdle should have taken McDonald out before the damage was done.  He [...]
