TEAMS: San Francisco Giants, Oregon State Beavers
See you again, dudes. Hopefully sooner than later.
Infielder Joe Panik and catcher Andrew Susac were among the four cuts made by the Giants today as they trimmed their roster down to 56 players.
Panik, 21, was the Giants’ first round draft pick (and 29th overall) last June. After tearing up the rookie league at Salem-Keizer (.341/.401/.467, 0.868 OPS, 6 HR, 54 RBI in 69 games), the St. John’s product went down to the Arizona Fall League and promptly hit .323/.394/.473 (0.867 OPS) with 6 doubles, 1 triple, 2 HR and 13 RBI in 27 games (93 at bats) for the Scottsdale Scorpions. Panik hit safely in 18 of his final 21 games in the AFL.
In seven Cactus League games, Panik batted .500 (3-for-6).
The soon-to-be 22-year-old Susac (his birthday is March 22) appeared in just three Cactus League games, and was 1-for-2.
Susac, a Roseville, Calif. native, was taken by the Giants in the second round of last June’s amateur draft.
After being named the No. 5 prospect in the Cape Cod League by Baseball America in 2010, Susac went to Oregon State and played in 42 games for the Beavers, including 33 starts at catcher. He batted .260 with four doubles, two home runs and 13 runs batted in.
Panik and Susac are two names to remember if you’re a Giants fan (as I pointed out last November in my <a title="22gigantes.com: "22 San Francisco Giants Prospects You Need To Know"" href="http://22gigantes.com/2011/11/22-san-francisco-giants-prospects-you-need-to-know.html" target="_blank">“22 San Francisco Giants Prospects You Need To Know” article).
Along with Panik and Susac, the Giants also optioned two players from their 40-man roster—shortstop Ehire Adrianza and centerfielder Francisco Peguero—to the minors.
Adrianza, 22, played in five games this spring, and went 0-for-3.
The 23-year-old Peguero is coming off arthroscopic knee surgery and did not appear in any Cactus League games.
I’ve updated the Giants’ non-roster invitee list <a title="22gigantes.com: "Giants' 2012 non-roster invitees"" href="http://22gigantes.com/front-office/roster/non-roster-invitees/" target="_blank">here.
