Jonathan Papelbon gave up six earned in 2/3 of an inning as the Phillies lost to the Tigers 10-1.
The Good
For a 10-1 loss, this could have been a lot worse. Cliff Lee pitched a hitless two innings with two Ks and Tyler Cloyd followed with two hitless innings of his own. Phillippe Aumont was sharp in his hitless inning, registering a strikeout.
Ryan Howard continued his solid play, going 2-2 off lefties. Howard’s most promising moment of the game was his deep sac fly with the bases loaded, no out, facing an 0-2 count. Howard has looked composed with a very good eye so far.
Areas of Opportunity
So, Howard essentially was the offense today. Other than Howard’s two hits, the Phils struggled to get runners on base. Yuniesky Betancourt, Freddy Galvis, and Josh Fields all had singles, and Chase Utley, Michael Young, and Ender Inciarte all drew a walk. And that’s it. We’ll chalk this one off to an off day.
And then there is Papelbon. Super prospect Nick Castellanos and Miguel Cabrera took ...

Domonic Brown clears the batters eye
Philadelphia Phillies outfielder is (inexplicably) fighting for a job this winter after the team signed veteran Delmon Young (who hasn't played in a spring game yet after offseason ankle surgery). Brown is having himself a solid spring so far, and on Tuesday, he hit his second homer of the preseason. This shot, a solo blast off of Zach Nuding of the Yankees, actually cleared...
Beach to Baseball: The First of a Phillies Spring Training Report
Waves crash on a sandy beach as the palm trees sway in the
cool gulf breeze. You get up from your spot on the beach just in time to hear someone

Miguel Cabrera Blasts Mammoth Home Run Off Jonathan Papelbon: Video
Miguel Cabrera’s home-run swing already appears to be in Triple Crown form. Two days after launching his first long ball of the spring, Cabrera took Phillies reliever Jonathan Papelbon way downtown, clearing a line of concession stands out behind deep left-center field at Philadelphia’s park.
“That is one of the longest home runs you’re going to see here at Bright House Field...

Miguel Cabrera and Jonathan Papelbon: Baseball Play Analysis
They say that, when it comes to understanding anything about the subsequent regular season, you should never pay attention to numbers in March. That’s good advice, and it doesn’t even bother to mention numbers in February. Today is February 25, spring-training competition has only just begun, and nothing matters. To whatever extent any baseball matters, February baseball matters...
Phils Sign Gallagher, Release Blanco
No, the Phils did not sign the balding man who smashes watermelons. The Phillies did, however, sign Austin Gallagher, a 24-year old Lancaster, PA native formerly of the Dodgers organization. Gallagher is a former 2007 Third Round pick who was at one point fast-tracked to High-A as a 19-year old in 2008 but has had issues staying on the field and has not progressed past High-A. Gallagher...
