Dustin Pedroia's troublesome right thumb is still an issue, and the Red Sox second baseman will undergo further tests from a team doctor during Thursday's off day back in Boston. Pedroia was held out of the lineup for Wednesday's series finale against the Oakland Athletics. He tore a muscle in the thumb in late May and missed six games. Pedroia said his thumb is sore in a different spot after he landed on the back side of his thumb trying to make a diving catch in the outfield during Tuesday night's 3-2 loss. ''Not really hurt. I just think he needs these two days, and so does he,'' manager Bobby Valentine said. ''He's a little stiff here and there.''
