The Miami Marlins held onto a 5-3 win over the Washington Nationals on Monday thanks to three exciting innings of relief from their bullpen.   The win was the 19th of the month for Miami which ties a franchise record for wins in a month.    The Marlins are now in second place in the National League East, two and a half games behind the Nationals.

Carlos Zambrano improved to 3-3 by tossing six innings of three run ball.  In the seventh, the first two hitters reached against Zambrano who struck out five on the day.  Manager Ozzie Guillen elected to go to the bullpen at that point and was rewarded for his decision.  Daniel Jennings retired the only batter he faced on a great diving catch by Chris Coghlan in left field.   Edward Mujica then entered and picked up an inning ending double play with one pitch against Ryan Zimmerman who had brought home two runs earlier int he game.    Mujica would go on to work a perfect eighth inning as well setting the stage for a Heath Bell save opportunity in the ninth.   Bell struck out the first two batters he faced and finished with a 1-2-3 inning for the save, his eighth of the year.   The appearance came after two nearly blown saves in the San Francisco Giants’ series this past weekend.

Giancarlo Stanton hit his 11th home run of May and twelfth overall on the year in the sixth inning, it was a two run blast that tied the game at the time.   Logan Morrison also homered, hitting his third of the season in the fourth inning.   For Morrison, his bat stayed hot with his fifth double of the year as well.    Hanley Ramirez was 3-3 with a run batted in and a run scored as he continues to inch closer to the .260 batting average mark.

Miami will try to make it an even 20 wins in May on Tuesday with Edwin Jackson scheduled to start against Anibal Sanchez.
