The Philadelphia Phillies have agreed to a one-year, $3.585 million deal with pitcher Kyle Kendrick that will enable the two sides to avoid arbitration. Kendrick was a valuable part of the pitching staff in 2011, beginning the season as a long reliever before filling in as a starter when Joe Blanton and Roy Oswalt got hurt. Kendrick finished the year 8-6 with a 3.22 ERA in 114.2 innings pitched. He appeared in 32 games, 17 as a reliever and 15 as a starter. His strikeout rate is still among the lowest in the league but he kept his walks down (2.4/9) and was able to post the best ERA and strikeout to walk ratio of his five-year career. Kendrick initially debuted for the Phillies in 2007, going 10-4 with a 3.87 ERA as a pleasant surprise addition to the rotation. The rookie helped the team capture the NL East, although his only postseason start was a disaster (5 ER in 3.2 IP). Kendrick struggled in 2008, posting a 5.49 ERA in 30 starts and was left off the postseason roster. He ended ...

Jim Thome, at 41 years-old, is in the best shape of his life. Perhaps in better shape than most younger players in the league today. It's pretty amazing to think that a guy who has had so many health problems when the Phillies traded him to the White Sox seven years ago, could be in such great shape today. Maybe it was the journey of chasing 600 home runs. Whatever is causing...
