Once the prized gem of the Cliff Lee trade to Seattle, relief pitcher Phillippe Aumont has been anything but a prized gem. Today, it was announced by the Phillies that Aumont will be optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley and in his place recall RHP Ethan Martin. Martin was one of the pieces; the Phillies acquired in the Shane Victorino trade to Los Angeles and has shown promise in the majors. #Phillies option RHP Phillippe Aumont to AAA and recall RHP Ethan Martin. — Matt Leon (@MattLeonKYW) June 3, 2014 Aumont, who was literally back up with the big league club this weekend did not have good appearances out of the pen. Out of two games in the Mets series, which were Sunday and Monday, Aumont had a 21.60 ERA in 1.2 innings pitched and gave up two home runs in the process. With Aumont going back to the minors, it’s time to see what youngster Ethan Martin can do. Martin, who had a solid performance last season as a starter went through some injuries this season and has complained about a “dead arm period” that he was going through. Nevertheless, in the minors he performed very well out of the pen. In eight games with Lehigh Valley this season, Martin had a 1.69 ERA with 11 strikeouts, four walks, and has held opponents’ batting averages to .231. Hopefully, Martin can provide another spark to the bullpen as it was taxed in the five game series against the New York Mets this past weekend.
