Three people will give you three different answers about Delmon Young of the Philadelphia Phillies.  Which camp are you in? TAL’S HANDY CAPS:  POLL WELCOME, NEWCOMERS: This is my fourth poll, which will be honed over time, like my other postings. If you’re interested in checking out something different, my weekly storyline articles are designed to represent a baseball man’s thinking, the view from the dugout and the GM’s box. Please go to my author archives or Phillies page for my most recent coverage. Scroll down to Tal’s Handy Links at the bottom. Thank you.   Check out:  Philadelphia Phillies storyline: Roster roulette   Baseball-Fix Schedule   The new summer schedule will allow me to publish the best 3 storylines each week, and there will be an updated calendar included with each feature: Posts involving commentary, polls and stats will be listed for the upcoming 7 days.   TIMEFRAMEFORMATPUBLISHING December to AprilBaseball-Fix MondayWeekly December to AprilSuds or Studs2-4 Times a Month April to Season's EndNitecap Insight3 Times a Week April to Season's EndSuds or Studs2 Times per 10 Days April to Season's EndTal's Handy Stats2 Times per 10 Days   Young Singles in a 1st-Inning Run during ALCS Game 4 at Home on October 18 against the Yankees     The End Result:    Will Young be the solution in the 5 hole for the red pinstripes? There are three opinions on the new right fielder. He will be a smart acquisition, there is no way to tell at this time, or this is a horrible move by the brain trust. There are a number of factors to consider. They are his health, his off-field activities, his contract, his defense and his offense. He had surgery on his right ankle in November, and may be slowed by the recuperative process. His fitness is questionable but he did drop 20 pounds recently. And he has 6 incentives for weight during the season at $0.1 million each. He also has had some late-night issues, but now realizes he has a lighter wallet as a consequence. He went from $6.75 million with the Tigers to $1.35 million now, which includes making the 6 scale-based requirements. Young Records the Final Out of Game 2′s 6th Inning during the World Series on October 25 In San Francisco Before his balky ankle, Young was a plus fielder with a strong arm and right field had been his best position.  He struggled in Detroit with bone spurs, which mostly limited him to designated hitting.  Also, there is less real estate to patrol at the Bank.  That stated, Young only has to be an decent defender for the Phils with his offsetting run production. He had a 61-point advantage (.308) against southpaws last summer, but he now has Charlie Manuel, who is one of the most knowledgeable batting gurus to closely observe his mechanics. However, one thing most agree on is that he can flat out hit, and–like Ryan Howard–he elevates his game during RBI opportunities. And he crushed half of his 18 taters during 2012 in cavernous Comerica Park. Also, Young produced an over .300 average from both sides of the plate during the 2012 postseason. Is Young going to be the inexpensive success story, like Juan Pierre was last year? If you think this move will turn out to be a master stroke, Young is a stud. If you feel it’s too early for a reasoned selection, you should give him a pass. However, if an immediate thumbs-down is your opinion, blast him with the suds.   Young Is Awarded the ALCS MVP after Game 4 against the Yankees on October 18 at Home Stud = a solid 2013 with bat & glove Suds = a beer-league season Pass = not predictable Take Our Poll     LINK-UP BELOW: A link for specific email notification is provided below. Any holdups that may occur will be posted at Tal’s Handy Caps on Facebook. Check out my 3rd poll for 2013 (January’s Speculation) on the Phillies page or my author archives, where there is an excerpt photo.  I will periodically publish the 2013 ERA for the NL East and the 2013 ERA for the MLB 5.
