Entering today’s start against the Colorado Rockies, Kyle Kendrick had an ERA that defied all of his peripheral numbers. He entered the game 3-2 with a 1.66 ERA. Those sound like lights out numbers, but they’re a little deceiving. He’s walked 12 batters in 21 innings and struck out just six. His strikeout to walk ratio is 0.50. His FIP is 4.16 and his xFIP is 5.70. What do those numbers mean? His ERA should be a lot higher than 1.66. A lot higher. He’s working his way out of jams too much. There’s a such thing as statistical regression to the mean, and Kendrick will likely be experiencing the effects of this soon. Tonight, he lasted just three innings, giving up seven hits and five runs. He walked two and struck out two. His ERA skyrocketed to 3.28 and it will likely continue to climb.
