Mlb-all-star-home-run
From the rumormongers, there is the tantalizing name on the Philadelphia Phillies of Cliff Lee. How many future stars will he net this time? TAL’S HANDY CAPS:  POLL WELCOME, NEWCOMERS: This is my 14th poll and I will hone them over time, like my other postings. If you’re interested in checking out something different, my storyline articles–by design–represent a baseball man’s thinking, the view from the dugout and the GM’s box. Please go to my author archives or the Phillies page for my most recent coverage. Scroll down to Tal’s Handy Links at the bottom. Thank you. Check out:  Philadelphia Phillies storyline: Destination revisited The new summer schedule will allow me to publish the best 2-3 storylines each week, but there will be an updated calendar included with each feature:  These posts involve commentary, polls and stats for the upcoming 7 days. Post time is mostly 5 to 9 pm for the days listed below. May 6 to May 12 A wild-card feature will be published at times. The speculation at the trading deadline is never enjoyable for the losing team. It’s difficult when the vultures circle above your also-ran favorites, like Scott Rolen and Curt Schilling. There was little hope for the playoffs in April at that time, and then there was the dread of bidding farewell to your best players. It meant that the following season would offer less to root for. Hamels Dials up a 2-seam Fastball during the 1st at the Bank on May 4 against the Marlins. There are other unpleasant aspects, like pitch counts due to money’s influence. The limit on the number of bullets doesn’t bother me, because it’s a futile attempt to control nature. The mound legends with their 300-inning campaigns think that is normal, and it was for them. Ten people in the same room will feel ten different ways from hot to cold, which means every hurler has a different endurance limit on his arm without a method for measurement. Then, there are injury reports that confound the faithful. Some start as minor issues and become 2-month stays on the 15-day DL. On the other hand, there are the flu-like symptoms of one-size-fits-all. Sometimes, it’s the last-minute scratch that turns into a week. Utley Records the 1st of 27 Outs at the Bank on May 3 against the Marlins. In 2012, it was brutal with the swaps of Hunter Pence, Shane Victorino, Jim Thome and Joe Blanton. After the break the squad needed 2 weeks to get reacclimated, which was near the end of July. There was no way that Cole Hamels or a fire sale was about to occur, but that didn’t keep contending organizations from salivating over our aces. That said, the 2013 budget dictated the deals, which softened the blow for me. The red pinstripes had half of their major pieces on the shelf last summer, which produced a .500 record. However, they are healthy now and experiencing their new physical boundaries, which indicates a decent postseason ahead. That stated, I have found a new bitter reality for this 162: Rumors in late April will become fantastic trades around July 31. Lee, Chase Utley, Roy Halladay, Jonathan Papelbon, Mike Adams, Michael Young, Delmon Young and Jimmy Rollins are on the menu for fans from other cities to picture in their dugout. When the Phils are 4 games out on May 5, I don’t want to read about unloading Lee.   What pushes you the most over the edge? You can only select one. Lee Fires a 2-seam Fastball during the 1st on May 1 in Cleveland. SF Giants Rumors: Cliff Lee Could Be On The Giants Radar

Last night didn’t go as planned for the San Francisco Giants. Cliff Lee and the Phillies pumped the brakes on the Giants six game winning streak. Andrew Baggarly of CSNBayArea.com says it’s worth the Giants’ time to pick up the phone and inquire about a possible trade for Lee. It’s not likely that the Phillies will be able to keep pace with the Braves and Nationals, so they...

Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Cliff Lee calls out teammates

Credit: Tony Dejak/AP Philadelphia Phillies ace Cliff Lee if fed up, and he’s not taking it anymore.  The Phillies are one of the more disappointing teams in baseball thus far, sitting at 13-16 and only ahead of 4 teams in the National League (Cubs, Padres, Mets, and Marlins, who they defeated today).  For a veteran team that has won a World Series within the last 5 years, it’s...

Phillies 6, Giants 2: Cliff Lee masters, Dom Brown blasters

That's more like it. It seems like it has been a while since the Phillies got that so-called complete game effort from the team, but last night in San Francisco they gave it. Cliff Lee was in command on the mound, Domonic Brown delivered the first McCovey Cove blast in Phillies history and the defense did not disappoint in the field for the most part. The result was a 6-2 victory...

Lee, Young Power Phils Over Giants

Cliff Lee came up huge for the Phillies on Monday night. (AP Photo) The Phillies kicked off their seven-game road trip in style on Monday night in San Francisco, notching a 6-2 victory over the world champion Giants behind the arm of Cliff Lee and the bat of Michael Young.  Lee sparkled in 8 innings, looking very much like the dominant starter we saw in early April.  Young knocked...

Cliff Lee Dominates Giants; Phillies Win 6-2

Don't look him directly in the eyes On paper, Cliff Lee vs. Madison Bumgarner seemed to be quite the pitching matchup. And, that's close to what we saw. Even though Bumgarner would go on to give up five runs, it did not feel like a large lead. Luckily for the...

Phillies 6, Giants 2

A day after a demoralizing 12-run loss at home, the Philadelphia Phillies delivered just the kind of well-rounded victory manager Charlie Manuel had been seeking. Having Cliff Lee on the mound in San Francisco sure helped the cause. Lee shut down the Giants once again with eight strong innings in a ballpark where he thrives, Michael Young hit a two-run double among his three hits...

Dirk Hayhurst Mentions Cliff Lee in Cheating Allegations, Pitcher Asks ‘Who Is Dirk Hayhurst?’

Dirk Hayhurst has really made a name for himself over the past three days. Even Cliff Lee now knows the guy. Hayhurst, a former big league pitcher and current Toronto radio host, accused Clay Buchholz of doctoring the baseball during Wednesday’s Red Sox-Blue Jays game. That kicked off a media firestorm, and Hayhurst has since received plenty of backlash on Twitter. Hayhurst wrote...

Blue Jays Television Analyst Calls Cliff Lee A Cheater Too

Just mere days after causing controversy by calling Red Sox pitcher Clay Buchholz a cheater, Dirk Hayhurst is at it again (Who is Dick Hayhurst? Hayhurst serves as a color commentator for Blue Jays television broadcasts and pitched in the major leagues in 2008 and 2009). After the controversy Hayhurst...

The Phils begin their first trip to the west coast by beating the Giants, 6-2.

The Phils’ offense return after being missing for two games as they support Cliff Lee’s good start by beating the Giants, 6-2. The Phils tried to get on the scoreboard in the top of the first as they loaded up the bases, via singles by Michael Young and Ryan Howard, with M. Young stopping at second base, and a walk to Delmon Young, with both M. Young and Howard moving up a base...

Phillies Begin West Coast Road Trip In San Francisco; Cliff Lee, Madison Bumgarner Get Nods

After ending their weekend series at home against the Marlins with a 2-2 split and some bad news about Roy Halladay, the Phillies hit the road for a six-game road trip on the West Coast. The Phillies will visit the San Francisco Giants starting tonight to open a three-game set...

Phillies-Giants Preview

Madison Bumgarner isn't getting much run support, but the NL West-leading San Francisco Giants usually win when he takes the ball. That's not happening for the Philadelphia Phillies when Cliff Lee does. Bumgarner and the Giants try to extend their season-best winning streak to seven in Monday's night's series opener at AT&T Park, where Lee has a 20-inning scoreless...
