With 4 hard-fought victories on the west coast, Cliff Lee and the Philadelphia Phillies held their own. Despite 3 one-run setbacks, how did you feel about the road trip? TAL’S HANDY CAPS:  POLL WELCOME, NEWCOMERS: This is my 15th poll and I will hone them over time, like my other postings. If you’re interested in checking out something different, my storyline articles–by design–represent a baseball man’s thinking, the view from the dugout and the GM’s box. Please go to my author archives or the Phillies page for my most recent coverage. Scroll down to Tal’s Handy Links at the bottom. Thank you. Check out:  Philadelphia Phillies storyline: Behind the scenes The new summer schedule will allow me to publish the best 2-3 storylines each week, but there will be an updated calendar included with each feature:  These posts involve commentary, polls and stats for the upcoming 7 days. Post time is mostly 5 to 9 pm for the days listed below. May 13 to May 19 A wild-card feature will be published at times. Any schedule changes and holdups will be posted at Tal’s Handy Caps on Facebook. Sat.Twice a Week   Carlos Ruiz Bangs a 2-out Single during the 9th on May 12 in Arizona.   SUDS OR STUDS       In the Game: The Phils had 60 defeats during their best season in franchise history. Over the course of the scheduled 162, there will be poor starts, bullpen failures, scoring droughts and sloppy fielding. During a streak no team is that bad losing or that good on the opposite extreme. However, setbacks are easier to absorb if the club has a realistic opportunity for a triumph. That happens when you feel that you could have easily won every battle instead of only half. Ryan Howard Strokes a 2-run Single during the 10th on May 12 in Arizona. When you consider the competition, San Francisco has the 2nd best record in the National League, and is 8-3 for their last 11 decisions. They are 7-1 when you deduct that recent 3-game series against the locals, and are 14-5 at home without those 3 contests. Meanwhile, they just took 3 of 4 from the Braves, outscoring them 26 to 10. Remember, the lone defeat in San Francisco featured a comeback against their 12-save closer, and it was only his 2nd blown chance this year. After winning 5 in a row, Arizona could only cross the plate 3 times total against the red pinstripes on Saturday and Sunday. This followed 2 one-run cliff-hangers that went down to the final out. After a 15 to 8 tally over the Giants, the Phils outdid the Diamondbacks 10-8 for a total of 25-16. They capped off their foray into the desert with rallies in the 9th and 10th innings.   Current Stats (at Game 39) for the Phillies: Philadelphia Phillies: 2013 ERA for the MLB 5 at game 37   How do you rate the road warriors for this western swing?   Jonathan Papelbon Celebrates his 7th Save at the End of the 10th on May 12 in Arizona.
