Philadelphia Phillies storyline: Chase’s on 1st? isportsweb

Chase Utley will travel with the Philadelphia Phillies on the road trip before he competes at first-stop Clearwater.  What happens at 2nd base when he returns?  How often will Chase be stationed at 1st? Where does Freddy Galvis fit in?

The Chrystal Champagne Toast is a salute to Jake Diekman.

He has calmed down after his walking-on-air first outing, and his rushing-his-pitches second attempt.

Hunter Tracks Down The 5th-Inning Out

Hunter Pence entered the Leather Warehouse with a sliding-and-tumbling catch into foul territory in the 5th.

The House Of The Rising Son elevates Diekman for punching out all 4 left-handed sticks in the 7th and 8th over 1.2 innings. This is his 3rd standout showing in 4 tries, as he is settling into NL life.

The Whitehouse was alerted in the 8th for the 1st MLB homerun by Erik Kratz, who is here with Jimmy Rollins on maternity leave.

Hector Luna was on trial at the Kangaroo Courthouse for missing a pick-off throw in the 2nd, while Doc was charged with an errant toss.

The Outhouse was occupied by HP ump Gary Cederstrom for ejecting Chooch Ruiz with a lighting quick hook in the 3rd.

WELCOME, NEWCOMERS:

I will publish after every battle that is not washed out. The Phillies finished last summer 42 games over .500, which equaled a year of many positives. I will have many season-long highlights of puzzle pieces, especially important after drubbings and defeats.

Freddy Trying To Corral The Spinning Infield Single In The 2nd

NITECAP INSIGHT

The Rookie And The Vet:

One of the most interesting developments since February’s camp opening has been Galvis. When Jimmy inked for 3-4 campaigns, I felt that Freddy could man 3 infield positions to rest the aging defenders. That would give him plenty of AB, considering that he averaged .298 at Triple-A Lehigh Valley for 33 games after his promotion from Double-A Reading last summer. Galvis would be more valuable than Michael Martinez due to his offense.

I was surprised by his glove work because I was only anticipating above the norm. Rollins has compared him to Roberto Alomar as a second baseman, and he just began on the right side of the diamond. Alomar was known for his superiority at second, and I remember he was awarded errors on balls that his peers couldn’t reach. Freddy has 1 boot for 312 frames and is among the best at 2nd in the majors. There is one player with no miscues and 4 others at 1 for 300 innings or more. Plus, he was a shortstop by trade and has just converted to the new spot.

Chooch After Being Kicked Out When He Looked At The Blue On A Questioned Call

The even bigger surprise has been his RBI production after leading the team in that category during spring training. He has 19, which is 3rd behind Chooch (29) and Hunter (28). Over his last 13 contests, he is at .320 with 2 bombs, 11 RBI and 3 walks. He has spoiled everybody with his D, and there are concerns that Chase will be a downgrade at 2nd. We may be seeing Utley at 1st until Ryan Howard returns, if he is back before him. Plus, he can spell him there with Galvis at 2nd.

Utley’s time in the league will be probably shortened to 2012-2013 with those balky knees. Freddy may be the 2nd sacker for J-Roll’s last 2 tours. That said, will Chase be on first for 25% of his 2012 appearances?

The program acronym is for Methodical Algorithmic Computerization or Mac.  That is the feed system that had dogged me an entire month, but it allows me now to probe for a compatible solution.  This only involves readers who were directed here from Fox Sports.  The links in this section were recently passed over by a computer’s judgment.  Does the national-and-all-major-sports machine understand Phillies commentary better than local fans?  I discovered that the buttons and lights objected the most to the storyline when I submitted only that part.  So, when the electrodes decide a Nitecap Insight isn’t to their liking, I’ll give my transferred readers a viewing opportunity the next day.  I’ll keep score of acceptable to rejected submissions, because I don’t want a large readership excluded or my time wasted.

Wikipedia Appears to Side With Ruiz on Ejection

In last night’s 5-2 loss to the Nationals, Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz was thrown out by umpire Gary Cederstrom in the 3rd inning for looking at him. According to reporter Jim Salisbury, Ruiz did not cuss, yell or even say anything offensive. Manager Charlie Manuel stated, “[Ruiz] said he just told the umpire, ‘That was a strike,’ and when he looked up at him he threw him...

True Phillie Material: Bob Stumpo

Throughout the 1990’s and into the 2000’s, Bob Stumpo, a resident of Wilmington, DE, grew up rooting for his local Major League Baseball team, the Philadelphia Phillies. Currently, Stumpo is a catcher/first baseman for the Phillies Class A affiliate, the Lakewood BlueClaws in the South Atlantic League, where he is developing into a player worthy of wearing a Philadelphia uniform...

MLB Opinion: Amaro’s Folly in the Cole Hamels Contract Saga

They say that the true measure of a general manager can only be seen over time. Now is the time to look back and realize how Philadelphia Phillies GM Ruben Amaro made a big mistake when dealing with Cole Hamels. In January of 2009 Ruben Amaro signed Cole Hamels to a 3 year contract to buy out his arbitration years and try to remove some of the unpleasantness that Hamels had in previous...

Hamels pitches Phils past Nationals

Cole Hamels pitched eight scoreless innings, finishing up by retiring Bryce Harper on a grounder as the Philadelphia Phillies snapped a season-long four-game losing streak Wednesday night with a 3-1 victory over the Washington Nationals. Hamels (7-1) didn't allow a hit until Danny Espinosa doubled with one out in the sixth. The left-hander won his seventh straight decision....

Leitch: If Hamels Wants Old School, Watch Bryce Harper

Once again Will Leitch shows why he’s one of my favorite writers, especially when pertaining to baseball. And this time, it’s not just because he’s sticking up for Bryce Harper. Or because he obviously likes Harper for the same reasons I do. But it’s because he does those things more eloquently and subtle than I’ve done in the past on this very blog. And this is all just...

Cards come up short in opener vs. Phillies

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Shane Victorino and Freddy Galvis each drove in three runs, including Galvis' go-ahead single in the sixth inning, and the Philadelphia Philles beat the St. Louis Cardinals 10-9 on Thursday night. Placido Polanco, Carlos Ruiz and Ty Wigginton added three hits apiece for Philadelphia, which had a season-high 18. Jonathan Papelbon pitched the ninth for his 13th...

The Phils’ losing streak is now at four games as Roy Halladay loses his first start against the Nats, as the Phils lose 5-2.

Roy Halladay loses his first start against the Nationals as the Phils’ losing streak rises to four games as they lose to the Nats, 5-2. The Phils took the lead in the second as, with one man on, and with one man out, Hector Luna hits an RBI ground-rule double, scoring Hunter Pence, who had started the inning off with a single, then moved up to second base on Carlos Ruiz’s ground...

About Bryce Harper's glove and arm last night

Phillies’ Rotation Woes Make Hamels’ Dominance More Impressive

If you would’ve asked this question in January, I probably would have laughed in your face. On a staff with Cliff Lee and Roy Halladay, Hamels has often been the most overlooked “franchise player” in all of baseball. However, a rocky start for the rotation is causing a drastic rise in Cole’s stock. Hamels is 6-1 in 8 starts this season, averaging over a strikeout an inning...

Cole Hamels Pitches a Gem To Avoid A Sweep From the Nationals

Cole Hamels tossed eight scoreless innings and the Philadelphia Phillies avoided getting swept by the Washington Nationals with a 4-1 win in the finale of a three-game set. The last time Cole Hamels faced Washington, he plunked Bryce Harper in the back, later stating that he intended to hit the rookie as a welcoming to the big leagues. That led to a five-game suspension for Hamels...

Phillies-Cardinals Preview

The St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Philadelphia Phillies in last season's NL division series before going on to win their 11th World Series. The Cardinals try for a 13th...
