Jimmy Rollins provided the rebound spark for the Philadelphia Phillies.  Can he will his club to close the 8-game gap for the 2nd wild card?

TAL’S HANDY CAPS

WELCOME, NEWCOMERS:

I will publish after every game that is not washed out.  I will have many summer-long highlights of puzzle pieces, especially important after drubbings and defeats. If you were directed here by a feed and this review does not mention yesterday’s contest, please go to the Phillies page for my most recent coverage. (Early morning readers may arrive before the latest post.) Scroll down to Tal’s Handy Links at the bottom. Thank you.

The Two-Sided Coin:

To answer the above question, J-Roll got my yes vote for the slimmest of margins. That is a tie for the 2nd wild card on the final day of the season. That stated, there are 2 dugouts on the diamond, and those regulars have the same goal. Just yesterday, the Reds fought down to the final strike, like the Braves had done on Sunday.

In the 2nd half the Phils are 3-2 (.600) against Cincinnati, who have gone 35-16 (.686) since the break. Atlanta had a stronger desire to win, because they don’t want a 1-game playoff for more October battles. They are 30-20 (.600) since the daily return on July 13, and they needed a beneficial bounce at third base to salvage a victory. The red pinstripes are 28-20 (.583) during the same timeframe. Their series records are 9-4-2 total and 6-3-1 against postseason-headed organizations.

This one-of-a-kind year is on course to encapsulate franchise history within its parameters. In 1983, the team rose from last place during September to the World Series. A young pitcher, wearing #50 (Marty Bystrom), was a big part of the 1980 squad; and yesterday it was Tyler (#50) Cloyd, who was triumphant on Labor Day. The icing on the cake would be a third matchup with the Yankees, including a different outcome. What can you expect during these last 27 contests? A roller coaster ride of highs and lows with a shrinking elimination number, while the margin for the 2nd wild card becomes more possible.
