On the offensive side of the ball, there are important slots for the Philadelphia Phillies to fill, and Michael Young can handle more than one. While Michael can be effective in the 2 and 3 holes, Delmon Young is better suited hitting behind Ryan Howard. TAL’S HANDY CAPS WELCOME, NEWCOMERS: By design my articles represent a baseball man’s thinking, the view from the dugout and the GM’s box. The squad jelled to some degree on the west coast with 4 victories and 3 one-run battles that were within reach. It wasn’t the case of 1 player carrying the team, but was a concerted effort by all in the dugout. The pitching (2.30 ERA) was excellent on both ends; the starters had a 2.49 ERA and the relief corps had a 1.72 ERA. Meanwhile, the RBI production came evenly–3 to 5 RBI each–from the first 6 regulars with Carlos Ruiz batting 7th. Delmon Snags a 6th-inning Shot on May 11 in Phoenix. During April, Michael combined with Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley and Howard to form the scoring attack. However, the power was primarily from the left-handers on the right side of the infield. Additionally, to deal with the speed of the game at the major-league level, the catcher and the right fielder needed approximately two weeks, which is mid-May. That stated, Delmon has 5 knocks in 10 at-bats for the last 3 contests.   Michael Makes a Diamondback Pay for a Base-running Blunder during the 2nd on May 9 in Phoenix.     Michael’s averaging .310 with 8 extra base blows or 20%, after he produced a 22.5% ratio last year and 27.2% in 2011. He hit under .300 last season and over .300 in that prior campaign. Other than less range compared to Placido Polanco or Pedro Feliz, he is solid with the glove and has a strong arm. He recently demonstrated his Utley-like skills when he intercepted a powerful throw home by Rollins to capitalize on a running mistake at third for the tag out (see above photo). Delmon Crushes an RBI Double during the 9th on May 12 in Phoenix.   Delmon plays deep because he has a problem with going back too far; however, he is better than most think in right field. He has made a few surprising catches, but he only has to convert the routine opportunities, which he enhances with a cannon on his shoulder. Usually when a star returns from the DL, he has success in his first game because of the adrenalin rush, but then it takes awhile for his reacclimation to reach completion. Delmon had only 1 hit during the 7 battles between the first one and the last 3, where he has accumulated those 5 knocks. While half of his 8 hits have been for extra bases, Delmon has shown in his last 3 starts that he is ready to pounce on some fastballs.   Phillies e-mail notification: Email Notifications   LINK-UP BELOW: A link for Phillies e-mail notification is provided above and below.
