Jimmy Rollins defines leadership for the Philadelphia Phillies.  Questions for Jimmy:   How many singles equal a homerun?  3 or 4?  Will small ball be the Titanic for the skipper?

The Crystal Champagne Toast is a salute to Freddy Galvis.

Freddy Completes A 8th-Inning DP

He hit his 1st career bomb and it wasn’t a cheapie. J-Roll delivered his 3rd multi-hit showing in the last 4 games with his 3 for 4 effort. However, he did commit his 1st error. Cliff Lee lined 2 base knocks in his only 2 at-bats.

Fun House Of Mirrors had its grand opening in the 2nd with a bunt double-play after the fact. The runner, who was successfully advanced, walked back to 1st before he realized his mistake midway.

The Outhouse was occupied by 2B Umpire Tom Hallion, because he called John Mayberry Jr. out. His call was based on the ball’s arrival and not the lateness of the tag.

I will publish after every battle that is not washed out. The Phillies finished last summer 42 games over .500, which equaled a year of many positives. I will have many season-long highlights of puzzle pieces, especially important after drubbings and defeats.

J-Roll's 6th-Frame Single Sails Into Right

Sleeping Midgets:

Cholley Manuel required a few contests to arrive at a basic lineup.  There are some orderly consistencies: Polly Polanco (2), Rollins (3), Hunter Pence (4), Chooch Ruiz (7) and Galvis (8).  The leadoff, 5 and 6 holes are the moving parts.  This brand of baseball features singles, some doubles, fundamentals, sport smarts and leg work besides stolen bags.  It also is a stomach-churning experience, where every run and play execution appears critical.  Every lead is precious and every deficit is disheartening.

Big John Lines Up His 6th-Inning Catch

Shane Victorino will appear mostly in the 1 and 5 slots. Jim Thome will swing 5th occasionally, and Juan Pierre will leadoff against right-handers without a knuckleball in their arsenal. Vic will hit 6th with both in the order. Against southpaws, 1B Ty Wigginton will bat 6th after LF Mayberry, and Vic will also fill the 5 spot before Laynce Nix verses right-handers. This is the clay that Cholley has to mold into an offensive threat. They are no longer the slumbering giants of ‘08.

They have crossed the dish 20 times, which is almost 3 per. Excluding the starters, the red pinstripes have 50 singles, 8 two-baggers and 5 taters out of 63 knocks. That’s 9 per battle for the 1 to 8 lineup. In 4 of the 7 games, the pitching has been stingy: 4 runs total. They were triumphant in 3 of them, but lost all 3 decisions that involved 16 tallies against.

That said, 3 number ones are coupled with Vance Worley and Joe Blanton, who have allowed 2 runs over 13 innings. That is for 2 reasons. They don’t want to embarrass themselves in front of the 3 studs, and they are getting pointers aplenty from them. The best examples are the changeup that the Vanimal added, and the change of speeds we saw from Kentucky Joe on Thursday night. It reminded insiders of Doc Halladay.

The Vanimal Deals In Pittsburgh On April 8

Vance Worley:

He is off to an encore performance and–so far–he is the 2011 breakout star who is duplicating his rookie stats.  This could be the dugout influence of the ace variety, which appears to have affected Blanton also.

Jon Niese Hurls Against The Braves At Home On April 8

Jon Niese:

He is like the passenger-side mirror that says: Objects may be closer than they appear.  His numbers don’t reflect what I’ve seen from him on the hump, which could be declining results after the 6th.

The next preview is Nitecap Insight:  Seeds Of Success (1st paragraph).  It will be at Tal’s Handy Caps on Facebook.  Join for notification of future glimpses, which will be almost daily.  You’ll also know immediately when my isportsweb post goes up.  It might be worth your while because I have seen delays of 2 hours on feeds.

Check out my previous publication (The Survivor), and the 24 storylines–so far–for 2012 on the Phillies page or my author archives, where there is an excerpt photo.

Tal’s Handy Stats is daily coverage. I am alternating the 2012 ERA For The NL East and the 2012 ERA For The MLB 5. Thank you, to all who bookmarked the Phillies page, because feeds are erratic at times.
