Cole Hamels is available from the Philadelphia Phillies as a big-ticket item.  Will some organization be willing to overpay for a rental or make long-term commitment?

I will publish after every battle that is not washed out.  I will have many season-long highlights of puzzle pieces, especially important after drubbings and defeats.  If you were directed here by a feed and this review does not mention yesterday’s contest, please go to my author archives or Phillies page for my most recent coverage. (Early morning readers may arrive before the latest post.) Scroll down to Tal’s Handy Links at the bottom. Thank you.

The Raw Data:

Rube Amaro is demanding 5 top prospects in return for 2 months of King Cole. So, unless a GM is willing to part with that high price and sign him for 7 years at $25M per, it is a futile exercise.  Is it worth the roll of the dice for the minefield that is the postseason? Perhaps, it’s a signal to his agent that other franchises also have limits. In other words, it is a negotiation tactic for a more reasonable re-upping. That said, you can count on a plethora of rumors, possible and ridiculous.

A Rynosaur Sighting At Triple-A Lehigh Valley

The red pinstripes will proceed in 1 of 3 directions. The first is that they will be 10 games out of the 2nd wild card by the break, and be sellers near mid-July. Or they will go 3-3 during the next 2 series, basically treading water. The second is that they are a beat team, which means that it won’t make a difference with Doc Halladay and Ryan Howard on the 25-man roster.

The final possibility is that after a few soul-searching days, they will be re-energized, have all their elite players back, and initiate their run for the playoffs. I feel that they are an in-the-dumps crew that needs some downtime for self-analysis. It would be nice to see a rebound over the Mets and Braves with a 4-2 record. However, the problem hasn’t just been the loss of 3 stars, but that their cornerstone group has been absent. Chase Utley and Howard are 2 of the core 4 that produced this champion.  Hamels has shouldered last place since Doc went down, while Jimmy Rollins has struggled to carry the load of the 3 central regulars. The 6 road battles after the 4 days off will decide their fate.
