Philadelphia Phillies second baseman Chase Utley will miss the remainder of the exhibition season and will not be ready for opening day due to his chronic knee issues.

It will be the second straight year that Utley will start the regular season as an observer. He missed the entire exhibition season in 2011 and did not play in his first game until mid-May due to patellar tendinitis in his right knee.

The five-time All-Star, who played in only 103 games last season, said he is not considering surgery nor is retirement an option.

"I think it’s important to get everything around my knees working correctly. And I think it’s going to take a little bit of time," Utley said. "I’m disappointed. I’m upset. I’m not happy that I’m in this situation right now, but I’m not going to let that deter me and get me down.”

Utley said is he battling a knee condition called chondromalacia - which he termed a roughening of the cartilage under the patellar.

"It’s not bad enough to have microfracture surgery. It’s not bad enough to end my career," Utley said. "It’s an issue I’m going to have to deal with. There’s a lot of wear and tear in this game, and I just have to get things around my knee to move better to take a little pressure off my knee.”

Utley had his worst season with the Phillies in 2011, batting .259 with 11 home runs and 44 RBIs. He has a .290 lifetime batting average with 188 home runs and 694 RBIs in 1,109 games.

Rookie Freddy Galvis will get first crack at taking Utley's place in the starting lineup.
