Roy Halladay outpitched Stephen Strasburg in a marquee matchup that became a bit testy as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Washington Nationals 6-3 Wednesday.
With one out and runners on the corners in the third inning, Washington's Strasburg hit Chase Utley in the lower left leg with a pitch. After getting two quick outs in the fourth, the Phillies' Halladay threw a pitch behind Tyler Moore.
The Nationals won their first NL title last season, ending the Philadelphia's five-year run atop the division.
The 36-year-old Halladay allowed two hits, a walk and struck out two in four scoreless innings for Philadelphia. The 24-year-old Strasburg gave up two runs, five hits and a walk in 3 2-3 innings. He had one strike out.
BEST OF MAXIM
Roy Halladay is one of the most accomplished pitchers in the majors, but his velocity will likely be a concern this season and moving forward.
Halladay turns 36 in May. He missed time last season with a lat injury, and he experienced shoulder problems that he attributed to a back issue. Though he pitched extremely well in April, he struggled in May before going on the disabled list...
Above, just a couple of screenshots of the pitch Roy Halladay threw behind Tyler Moore on Wednesday afternoon, an inning after Stephen Strasburg plunked Chase Utley with a pitch."It slipped." Halladay told reporters (with a smile) after the game.
Here's Roy, via Philly.com:
"Really, I think, we do need to protect our guys to an extent. I'm not saying...
Roy Halladay scattered two hits over four innings, striking out two in four innings of work as the Phillies beat the Nats 6-3.
During the game, Todd Zolecki reported that Delmon Young is aiming for a mid-April return. Zolecki insinuated that Dom Brown is likely to start the year as the team’s right fielder and then move to left once Young is ready to return.
'YEAH, THAT SLIPPED'
After Nationals phenom Stephen Strasburg hit Chase Utley with a pitch on Wednesday, Phillies ace Roy Halladay appeared to retaliate by throwing behind Tyler Moore.
Despite being regular opponents during the regular season, the Phillies and Nationals hardly play each other in the Spring. With Nationals camp located 149 miles away in Viera, FL, the bus ride is long. The Phillies tend to play local opponents such as the Blue Jays, Yankees, Orioles, Pirates, and...
If there was a bounce back "team" this season it would be the Fightin’ Phils. They have more guys who underperformed or battled injuries in 2012 than you can shake a stick at. Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, and new addition Michael Young come to mind. But the one guy whose bounce back season could be the key to winning for both the Phillies and your fantasy roster is Roy...
Billy the Philly Fan and Steve from My Two Cents rant about today’s Grapefruit League game between the Philadelphia Phillies and Washington Nationals. They said that Roy Halladay was a contender while Stephen Strasburg was a pretender and much more!
The National League East may be the most competitive division in Major League Baseball in 2013. Today’s preview of the Philadelphia Phillies and Washington Nationals at Bright House Field in Clearwater, Florida is showing how much fun this season may be for fans. The marquee match up of Roy Halladay and Stephen Strasburg did not disappoint as fans were treated to two of the games...
So it’s only March, but the NL East division title race may have already began. It’s always trouble in spring training when teams are a little too familiar with each other and face off in an exhibition. Mix in two hard-throwing aces and some other star players being hit by pitches, and you get what happened today.
An inning after Stephen Strasburg plucked Chase Utley (who...
Anthony Rendon has said he wants this Spring Training to be one the Washington Nationals management will remember.
In today's Spring Training game against the Philadelphia Phillies, Rendon hit his third home run of the spring to the opposite field. In 20 at-bats, Rendon is hitting .400, with eight hits, three homers, three doubles and eight RBIs. Make...
The Phillies pulled above .500 for the spring with yesterday's 6-3 win over the Washington Nationals. Roy Halladay dealed over four innings, despite a little controversy surrounding his throw behind OF Tyler Moore. Halladay said after his outing that the pitch slipped, but many are wondering about this claim. Earlier...
