The Philadelphia Phillies finished their season with a loss to the division champion Washington Nationals today. With the loss, the Phillies dropped to 81-81. After winning 102 games last year, this was most certainly a disappointment. As is usually the case when a team under performs, changes are made.
The Phillies informed bench coach Pete Mackanin, 1B/INF coach Sam Perlozzo and hitting coach Greg Gross that their contracts will not be renewed.
This logically paves the way for a spot for Ryne Sandberg to join the big club, but that’s only provided he stays put an doesn’t get snapped up by another team. He has been mentioned as a strong candidate in Boston.
Just because Charlie Manuel’s name is not on this round of cuts doesn’t mean to me that he’s safe. Charlie Manuel will enter the final year of his contract next year. It is no secret that Manuel doesn’t like the lame duck coach status. While managing the Cleveland Indians, Manuel entered the final year of his contract, didn’t like it, forced the issue with management and wound up telling the Indians that if they weren’t going to extend him to fire him. They obliged him. If a similar situation were to develop in Philly, you have to wonder if the organization might decide to make a change. The Phillies have been high on Ryne Sandberg since he arrived and many believe him to be the heir apparent to the Phillies managing job.
Firing some of the coaches sends a direct message to me that the Phillies want to move in another direction. Manuel may have earned the right to stay for now, but I’m not sure that’s on real solid ground.
To start the changes only moments after the season was complete, indicates that there are some more serious changes coming. Now that the season is over, I thought I’d be relieve or depressed. Instead, I find my curiosity is piqued already. It should be interesting to see how this offseason unfolds.
