Roy Halladay was placed on the 15 day disabled list today, and is expected to miss 6-8 weeks. Roy Halladay, the two time Cy Young Award winner, was placed on the 15 day disabled list by the Philadelphia Phillies today. Halladay was pulled from his outing on Sunday against the St. Louis Cardinals after only two inning because of what was termed at shoulder soreness. Halladay was evaluated today and diagnosed with grade 1/grade 2 strain of the right latissimus dorsi. In plain terms, Doc has a strained lat muscle, which is the largest muscle in the back and is responsible for internal rotation of the shoulder joint, which is probably why Doc reported shoulder soreness. Halladay will be shutdown from pitching at all for 3 weeks, in hopes of allowing the strain to heal. The team hopes to have Halladay back in 6-8 weeks. While the news isn’t exactly good for Phillies’ fans, it could have been a lot worse. Roy Halladay, who is now 35, has struggled so far this season, and has seen a dip in his velocity as far back as training camp. Speculation ran rampant on social media and the Internet about Doc needing Tommy John Surgery. That would have sidelined him for a year, though the surgery is more related to the elbow than the shoulder. A fake Jim Salisbury (the real Jim Salisbury covers the Phillies for CSNPhilly) account tweeted yesterday that Doc was out for the remainder of the year, starting a whirlwind throughout the twitterverse. The other option could have been a torn rotator cuff, which would also have required surgery and an extensive rehab. Any hope of signing Roy Oswalt to help stem the tide for the Phillies was dashed when he signed with the Texas Rangers for $5 million. The Phillies have suffered through a number of injuries so far this year, including the losses of their two best hitters in Chase Utley and Ryan Howard. Now Halladay. And possibly Carlos Ruiz, who has been their best player this season. Chooch will sit for the second straight game with hamstring tightness. Ruiz will be available to pinch hit. As bad as it is, the Phillies remain 4 games out of first place in the NL East.
