Phillies' All Star 2nd Baseman Chase Utley is still in Arizona rehabbing his knees. He will remain there until at least April 23rd.

The Phillies found some offense last night, nearly matching their total run output of their first 4 games with a 7-run outburst. It keyed the Phillies to a 7-1 victory over their division rival Florida Marlins, and improved them to 2-3 on the season.

The real news was in Ruben Amaro Jr.’s comments earlier in the day. Amaro gave brief injury updates on the team’s fallen stars.

Ryan Howard continues to recover from a ruptured Achilles’ tendon an subsequent infection. The slugger has rid himself of the infection that set him back, is no longer wearing a walking boot and has begun some cardiovascular exercise. He has been seen taking ground balls and cheering his team on from the dugout. Ryan Howard and the Phillies are still waiting for his wound to close before he progress further in his rehab. As has been the case, there is still no word on a timetable for Howard’s return to the Phillies.

Jose Contreras has shown steady improvement while rehabbing from a September elbow surgery. Contreras looked very shaky in Spring Training, giving up runs in nearly every outing as he continued to build his arm strength back up. He has had a couple of very solid outings now with the Clearwater Threshers and appears to be rounding into form. The next step in his rehab will be to throw on back to back days, which will happen later this week. Contreras would certainly bolster the team’s bullpen, and give the Phillies a solid 7th or 8th inning option. Contreras, the 40 year old Cuban righty, had success as the Phillies’ closer last year before going down with the elbow injury.

The Phillies’ All Star second baseman, Chase Utley continues to rehab in Arizona with a rehab specialist. Amaro chose his words wisely when discussing Utley, saying that he “seems” to be improving. The plan has been for Utley to remain in Arizona until the team arrives there, but Amaro conceded that it is possible Utley could remain there longer. Once again, there is no timetable for his return either.

Freddy Galvis, the Phillies’ starting 2nd baseman in place of Utley has two major league hits. It just so happens that they are both 2-run doubles. A “Fred-dy, Fred-dy, Fred-dy” chant broke out during the game last night as the fans at Citizens Bank Park rallied around the 22-year old Venezuelan as he stepped to the plate with the bases loaded. Galvis is batting .118 on the season, but delivered in a big way to bust the game open for the Phillies.

The Phillies will conclude their 3-game set with the Miami Marlins tonight, then open a 3-game set with New York Mets tomorrow. The Phillies currently trail the Mets and Washington Nationals by 1.5 games. Let’s see how long that lasts.
