Found November 01, 2012 on Phillies Nation:
I was very tempted to make this a joke review. I wouldn’t have written an intro or offered any insight and would have instead simply left a bolded “Grade F… no explanation needed.” Qualls was the most maligned Phillies player this season and was out the door by the end of June. He blew a number of games in a limited amount of time and his entrances became associated with doom. However, upon reflecting on his season, I realized that Qualls is a solid proxy for a discussion of certain statistical and analytical concepts. Consider this a hybrid review — I’m still giving him an F, so let’s get that out of the way right now, but he is worth discussing for important reasons that go beyond his cringe-inducing performance in a Phillies uniform. Qualls’ time with the Phillies serves as the perfect foray into discussions of: incorporating context, ERA and run prevention, the difference between per-9 and per-plate appearance statistics, and the need to dig deeper and consider all pertinent inf...

Phillies Player Review: Jimmy Rollins

Having just won his fourth Gold Glove award, this player review could not come at a better time for Jimmy Rollins, a man who could use a few positives in his corner. That’s because 2012 was one of the more contentious between Rollins and the fans. Rollins once again drew criticism when he became the focal point for a city-wide debate on if and when it’s ever appropriate for a...

Philadelphia Phillies storyline: Hired guns in the mix

Beyond the centerfield gate, there will be youth, inexperience and Jonathan Papelbon for the Philadelphia Phillies.  What role has he played in their growth? TAL’S HANDY CAPS   WELCOME, NEWCOMERS: I published after every battle that was not washed out.  I had many summer-long highlights of puzzle pieces, which were especially important after drubbings and defeats.  Please go...

Phillies Rumors: Philadelphia “Favorite” to Sign B.J. Upton

The Philadelphia Phillies are viewed as the early favorite to sign center fielder B.J. Upton, reports Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com. Baseball officials still see the Nationals as the favorites for Michael Bourn, while the Phillies are seen as an early favorite for Upton. After trading away starters Hunter Pence and Shane Victorino this summer, the Phillies...

Phillies eye help in outfield, middle relief

A year ago, the Philadelphia Phillies wasted little time raiding the free agent market. In the first 17 days of free agency, the Phillies signed future Hall of Famer Jim Thome to solidify their bench and inked All-Star closer Jonathan Papelbon to the richest contract in baseball history for a relief pitcher. It remains to be seen if the Phillies act as fast this winter, but it...

MLB Opinion: Frandsen Not Solution for Phillies at Third

Kevin Frandsen had a career year for the Philadelphia Phillies in 2012. The 30 year old journeyman hit .338 in 55 games after taking over at third base for the oft injured Polacido Polanco. It was an impressive season, but not enough to think that he can be a solution at the hot corner for a playoff contending team. Many fans are high on Frandsen and talk on many sports talk radio...

Phillies already moving on to 2013

The Philadelphia Phillies have spent the week putting their 2013 plans into place. General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. and the Phillies picked up the $5 million 2013 option on Carlos Ruiz and declined options on utility man Ty Wigginton and reliever Jose Contreras. Contreras was owed $2.5 million and Wigginton was due $4 million. Each played received a $500,000 buyout. The Phillies...

The Phils have accepted Carlos Ruiz’s option for 2013, declined options on Placido Polanco, Jose Contreras and Ty Wigginton.

The Phils have earlier this week (Monday) announced that they have accepted Carlos Ruiz’s $5 million dollar option for 2013, so he’ll be staying with the ballclub for at least another season.
